The past week has been really eye-opening to me as a young person in America. The votes are in, and as Hillary won the elections popular vote, Trump captured the win by taking the majority of votes of the electoral college. Democrats were not happy to see there golden girl fall.
Though Trump’s victory was not predicted by anyone, the real eye-opening events that I experienced were the reactions that people had on this election. I understand that people were, and are still upset that Hillary Clinton did not win, but I was not expecting what I saw.
My Wednesday morning began with tons of over-emotional boys and girls crying during my lecture as my professor always addresses the current events in the beginning of class. During this riveting morning, I had the great privilege to listen to the jeers of fellow students yelling “F*ck Trump” and “He’s not my President”. I was equally surprised as I was unimpressed. Later I checked into my Facebook, as I normally do multiple times throughout the day. I was absolutely appalled to see multiple posts and statuses that did not only bash on our president elect, but also posts that just disgraced everything that our nation stands for.
As well as showing their hate via social media, these angry, energy filled democrats also filled the streets of Manhattan protesting and shouting “Not My President!” Streets have been closed off, and many protesters have even been arrested for violence and disorderly conduct. So I ask, does this help? Does showing your hate and anger for the newly elected president really positively effect anything or anyone. And really, the answer is no.
Say what you want but Donald Trump is not an evil human being. Though he may seem like a man of bad morale and evil intentions, he's a politician, and the opinions of the opposite party have a lot to do with the bad image that is formed for him. He also does not hate women, in fact he has many prospective female cabinet candidates. These negative ideas that have been crafted are nothing but an artificial image that has been created by supporters of the opposing party.
I understand that people dislike the candidate that has been elected, and I also understand that we do live in a nation that is built upon the right to protest, but a president has been elected. We have a solid system, and the system does not lie. So, as I know there is much political unrest, we must unite as one. A nation that is destroying their own businesses, burning their own flag, and most importantly, protesting their own government, will never prosper. As Nelson Mandella once said, “An educated, enlightened, and informed population is one of the surest ways of promoting the health of a democracy”. Now all we can do is wait, and see what makes of the time to come.
