In terms of hype and the amount that were released this month, this month's album releases were lackluster to say the least. Although there weren't many big commercial success that we have grown accustomed to seeing in these past few months, there was still a number of great songs and projects that are worth talking about. So with that being said, here are the best releases from July.
ScHoolboy Q, "Blank Face LP"
Overall Grade: B+
Coming off his 2014 Interscope debut "Oxymoron", ScHoolboy Q is back with his new album, Blank Face LP and it easily the most anticipated album of July, maybe even the entire summer. Blank Face is exactly what GroovyQ fans expected, a star-studded gritty gangta rap album that speaks to not only ScHoolboy's gang and drug related past, but to his current lifestyle as a rapper. There are many memorable guest cameos throughout the album that help demonstrate the different styles that ScHoolboy is able to portray. From Vince Staple's verse on "Ride Out" that helps intensify Q's grit, to the jazz influence from Anderson .Paak that helps produce a smooth track, Blank Face is able to maintain its hype with each track. On "JoHn Muir", ScHoolboy pays homage to his former high school of the same name while also telling his story of growing up in the streets, and it is the standout track in my opinion. Mac Miller, "Dang!"
Overall Grade: A+
It's been almost a year since Mac released his album "GO:OD AM" and he is back with his new single, "Dang!" Backed by the insanely addictive funk instrumental and the incredible and unique voice of Anderson .Paak, Mac is able to create a lighthearted and lively track that results in extreme anticipation for his upcoming album, "The Divine Feminine", which is set for a September 16th release date. You can stream below:Logic, "Bobby Tarantino"
Overall Grade: C+
This past month, the Maryland rapper released surprise mixtape title "Bobby Tarantino", which is his first release since his critically acclaimed 2014 album "The Incredible True Story". The project's title is a reference to Logic's admiration for the filmmaker, Quentin Tarantino. Throughout the tape, Logic's rapid flow is evident and is matched with his ability to produce. In the words of Logic, "I'm like oh God, oh, oh my God". You can stream below:Jamila Woods, "HEAVN"
Overall Grade: A-
Known for her frequent collaborative efforts with Chance the Rapper on songs like "Sunday Candy" and "Blessings", the Chicago-based soul singer is ready to make a name for herself. Throughout the album, Woods demonstrates her calm neo-soul approach that is redolent of Erykah Badu. Borrowing lyrics from Incubus and The Cure on songs like "Stellar" and "Heavn", Woods is able to put her own twist on two very popular alternative rock records. Because I love both of those songs dearly, Jamila Woods has become my favorite female singer with the release of this album. You can listen below:
