Okay, unpopular opinion time. I don't believe in the saying, "money doesn't buy happiness." You could also interchangeably change money with any other material thing, and I still wouldn't agree with it. I know what you're thinking: "money doesn't continuously make you happy." Bear with me. Happiness is an emotion just like sadness and anger; they come and go. Happiness is not an emotion that stays all the time... no emotion is permanent.
In the definition of emotion, it's described as being based on one's circumstances, mood, or relationships with others. Getting twenty dollars makes me happy, getting paid makes me happy, buying a shredded chicken burrito from Taco Bell makes me happy.
I think too many people confuse joy and happiness. They're two completely different things. You see, if people said "money doesn't buy joy," I would completely agree. Joy is being content no matter your circumstances, while happiness is purely based on your circumstances. Joy comes from one thing: a relationship with the Lord.
"I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in every situation whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want." Philippians 4:12
How could Paul be in prison and still be content? How could he have been content in awful situations and circumstances? By having God, by trusting in him. True joy can only come from God himself. By being in Christ, you can experience joy and can truly be content in every situation that comes your way. Happiness is fleeting, joy stays as long as Christ is in your heart. Trust in him; let him fill you up with his joy. He has such an awesome plan for you.
