I'd have to say I'm pretty lucky when it comes to the mom I have. We've always been pretty close, but as I've gotten older, I've realized how #blessed I am to have the relationship I have with her. This is what it's like to have a mom and a friend all in one.
1. Your closet is hers.
I have the great luxury of wearing the same clothing size as my mother. I'm also blessed with a mom that has incredible taste in clothing. I know any time I need something to complete an outfit, she's there with three different options, plus jewelry to finish it off. When we go shopping now, whenever we see find something we both like, which is everything we find, it's understood that it will spend time in both of our closets.
2. You recommend shows to watch, and text each other about them.
My mom and I have always watched the same shows, from "The Hills" to "Everwood," so we know what kinds of TV the other likes. I just got my mom to start watching "Gilmore Girls," and I've started watching "The O.C.," and we text back and forth about the shows. I can't count how many conversations we've had based around these shows and others.
3. She gives you wine recommendations.
We love wine, probably more than the average person does. It's nice to have someone who knows good wine and tells me about new ones so I'll never walk around a liquor store looking like a lost child.
4. You end up cooking the same thing on the same nights.
This has happened more than you think it would. I've been cooking before and when she asks what I'm making, she's making the same thing. We've made chili on the same night, spaghetti, you name it. It's like we can read each other's minds.
5. She surprises you with leftovers when she's made something you like.
As most moms do, making enough food for leftovers is habit when you've had kids, and my mom is no exception, which definitely comes in handy. I know that if I'm ever craving what she made, I can count on her to bring me some of the leftovers.
6. You send each other videos or pictures that remind you of them.
Whether it's a vine or meme you know they would find funny, you know they have to see it. I've even sent recipes I've wanted to try.
7. Not a day goes by that you don't call or text.
I honestly can't remember the last time there was a day that I didn't talk to her. We check in on each other throughout the day, and usually talk on the phone before dinner. These aren't world-changing conversations, but it's nice to have someone to talk to after a long day.
8. Mom/daughter dates are essential.
Lunch dates, shopping dates, dinner dates, brunch dates, you name it, nothing is off limits. Boyfriends can be great, but the someone who will enjoy the inordinate amount of time you can spend in a bookstore and wants to try that new "chick food' restaurant is Mom, and who's to pass up on that?
9. You would never be embarrassed to go out with her.
I went out with my mom on my 21st birthday, and while that's not the norm, she made sure I had people buying me drinks all night. It's fun to have a mom to do normal things with, but one that'll party with you, now that's a blessing.
10. Her approval is necessary.
It doesn't matter what's going on, whether I need confirmation that these shoes will go with that dress, or if I need to know what she thinks about a decision, she's going to have input on the situation.
11. Her opinions are important to you.
She knows you better than probably anyone else in your life, so her opinion is important. Even if it's small, like which necklace would look better, or something larger, like what to do in a tough situation, it's important to know what she thinks. Whether you agree or not, it's still important to take her opinion into consideration since she knows you best.
12. She's always on your team and supporting you.
No matter what, your mom is going to be there for you. And when it feels like you're alone in the world, it's nice to know she's going to be in your corner.
