A Pageant Girl's Nightmare

Congratulations!… Oh Wait, Just Kidding.

It was one of the worst things that could have possibly happened at a Miss Universe Pageant. Imagine being center stage: Lights, cameras, and everyone's eyes are on you. Miss Colombia and Miss Philippines were trembling with anxiety and anticipation as Steve Harvey held the card in which contained the name of this year’s, 2015 Miss Universe.

Miss Colombia, otherwise known as Ariadna Gutierrez, was filled with excitement and honor as she heard Steve announce her title as Miss Universe 2015. She celebrated her victory, she waved and smiled to the billions of people watching from below in the crowd and on television at home. She was first awarded a Miss Universe sash, a gorgeous bouquet of flowers, and of course, the Crown.

For those who might have forgotten, Miss Universe 2014, Paulina Vega, was also from Colombia. With that being said, Paulina hugged Ariadna with joy as she passed down the beautiful and elegant crown. She was extremely grateful to share this incredible moment with her country for the second year in a row. Tears of happiness ran down Ariadna’s face as she took great pride in representing her country with this amazing title once again. All of her hopes and desires were turning into reality… or at least that is how it first appeared.

Unfortunately, Steve had made a terrible mistake. Miss Universe 2015 was supposed to be awarded to Miss Philippines instead. It was not until over two minutes later that Steve Harvey walked back on the stage in a hesitant and unenthusiastic manner. “Okay folks, I have to apologize”, he explained.

As I continued watching the live show, I thought that Steve, a comedian such as himself, was about to make a funny joke in order to get the crowd going for the last time. However, all of a sudden, he announced Miss Colombia as first runner-up. Everyone was in shock as their jaws dropped in disbelief of what had just occurred. The crowd roared with a variety of mixed emotions; some cheering with joy and others booing with anger.

The awkwardness continued to spread throughout the room as Miss Philippines was informed that she was Miss Universe 2015. Hesitant to walk back to the center of the stage, several other pageant ladies urged her to accept her earnings. Both women did a phenomenal job in representing their countries and handled this uncomfortable situation incredibly well with poise and grace. Similar to any other human being in the world, Steve Harvey made a mistake and is terribly sorry for his wrong doings.

Who was affected the most is debatable. However, I think everyone can agree that all three individuals [Steve Harvey, Miss Colombia and Miss Philippines] were the main talk of the 2015 Miss Universe Pageant. Good or bad, people love drama and this incident has received an immense amount of publicity.

“It’s amazing how things could change so quickly, in the blink of an eye. Maybe more miracles awaited on the horizon.” -Bryan Davis

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
