The Miss America pageant comes once a year, and with it come beautiful gowns, intelligent woman, and some cringe-worthy moments. This years contest was no exception. Here is my totally non-credible opinions on how it went down.
1. Vanessa Williams
The CEO Sam Haskell gave Vanessa Williams her long overdue apology.
“On behalf of today’s organization, I want to apologize to you and to your mother, Miss Helen Williams,” Haskell said. “I want to apologize for anything that was said or done that made you feel any less the Miss America that you are and the Miss America that you always will be.”Williams was the first African American Miss America and was forced to resign because of some unauthorized nude photos of her published by Penthouse. Vanessa Williams went on to become a successful actress and singer in the wake of the ridicule she was forced to face. I'm so glad she got the apology she deserved. Also her performance at the beginning was fantastic and does anyone else think she flipped the bird during her song? She's awesome.
2. Mrs. Colorado's "monologue"
I stand by this when I say yes, I'm sure she is a great nurse and all but talking is not a talent. I know that probably not all of them have artistic talents but could she not have maybe hired an acting couch? I'm a theatre major and I feel I have the slight right to call her out on that. She doesn't deserve harsh criticism or anything, and I commend her for trying to figure something out. The whole thing just seemed like it got more attention than it was worth.
3. Mrs. Louisiana's talent
Seriously this girl can sing! She absolutely deserved to win talent. Give it a listen if you would like your ear canal to be blessed by the Sound of Music.
4. "Smell our Dairy-air?"
I may have choked on my soda during this introduction line by Miss Wisconsin. Points for weird creativity.
5. The Questions
Overall the answers weren't terrible. The contestants all seemed like they were familiar with their question's topic at least. Except for Miss Georgia of course who got one of the easiest questions. I'm not well versed in the deflagate either, but her answer was a train wreck. I think its admirable that they have to formulate an answer in 20 seconds, and they weren't all awful.
6. And the winner is...
The Winner ended up being Miss Georgia despite tripping twice and messing up her question. I may be completely biased but Miss Louisiana was robbed.
She does have a fantastic ugly cry though, I'm jealous.
