September 9th 2016, the day the music industry broke my iPhone. Well, to be fair I have a 5s so it's not hard to do, but I definitely was not emotionally prepared for the music releases from last Friday.
A lot of things have changed since I started college this fall but I am still a creature of habit so just like every other Friday morning, I opened my laptop to the New Music Friday playlist on Spotify. My engineering student schedule has kept me from memorizing the record release dates so all I notice is that there is yet another single from the new Bastille album.
But as it would turn out, I should keep my annoyance with abundant singles to myself, because it wasn't just a full Bastille album... it was also Grouplove's and M.I.A.'s new albums (and Gavin Degraw for any One Tree Hill fans). I don't think I can accurately express how stressful this is for me. I didn't know where to start with all this content. Every time an album for an artist I even remotely like is released, I generally dedicate a week or so to just that album, so this was, in terms of anxiety, a lil bit much. So I decided to start easy, just listen to today's singles. It's just one song right?
Bad idea. It took me about an hour to wrap my head around the new Lady Gaga single. It's been 3 years since her last true album and I still do not fundamentally understand Gaga. Maybe I shouldn't have started the day off with such a strong character. Eat a Cliff bar and drink some water, you can do this. I tried not to get distracted by Tove Lo and acoustic OneRepublic, I had to prioritize. But I couldn't decide which of the full albums to listen to first. Momentarily a part of my brain, that I have since banished from the Pride Lands, suggested I make a playlist of all of them and just shuffle it.
I abandoned that idea almost immediately. I needed a new plan, one that allows me to listen to all of this music and maybe as a bonus pass my midterms. But that's when I realized, too late, that I missed all of the potential preparation I had for the M.I.A. and Grouplove albums.

The last few weeks I confidently played the Bastille singles thinking I was on top my shit in terms of the music industry. Only now did I realize I missed any possible way of preparing emotionally for the other two albums and now I have to go in totally blind. Somehow I missed all the signs, and I blame Physics 1250. Slowly throughout the day and remainder of the weekend I waded slowly through the September 9th releases and came out the other side... slightly underwhelmed.
Almost three and half hours of music that was relevant to my well being was released on September 9th, 2016. I almost broke my iPhone 5s (yeah the one with the headphone jack) trying to download all this music, I had a slight music mental breakdown (and not the good kind) at eight in the morning and even google couldn't tell me why it had to all be on Friday.
But that's okay, who needs sleep anyway?
