As of today, it is February 9th, 2016- five days before Valentine's Day. A day where couples are expected to buy each other overpriced chocolate, and three-course dinners in dimly lit restaurants. But, single people are just constantly reminded of their "singleness." Thus, society has dubbed February 14th as not only Valentine's Day, but as "Singe Awareness Day." My fellow single people, this is for you.
Dear everyone without a significant other on February 14th,
Do not worry. Do not be sad. Valentine's Day is not the end of the world. Valentine's Day is an extremely artificial holiday, and even people in relationships can agree that the capitalist system that we've built, just uses Valentine's Day to make more money. Last year on Valentine's Day, instead of focusing on my lack of a love life, I focused on the amount of amazing friends I have. My two friends and I had an amazing time on Valentine's Day. We went on a hike, treated ourselves to dinner, and then stayed up late adventuring and making memories. It was the best Valentine's Day I've ever had.
My point is, just because you're not in a relationship, doesn't mean you don't get to make Valentine's Day plans. Get some friends together, go out or have a night in (Walking Dead comes back on Valentine's Day cough cough)! Turn Valentine's Day into a "Treat yo self" day. Buy yourself chocolate, flowers, or those shoes you've been wanting. You deserve it.
You don't need a significant other to have a great day or to buy nice things for you. Spend Valentine's Day doing something that makes you happy with people that make you happy. One day, you will be able to celebrate Valentine's Day with a special person. Since that isn't this year, why waste time being sad on Valentine's Day? Make the most out of life... single or not!
Sincerely,
Another Single Person
