An Open And Honest Letter To Our Dear Friend Homework

Dear Homework
Katie Smith

Dear Homework,

I feel silly writing this letter to you seeing as you and I talked not even twenty-four hours ago. It seems we talk a lot these days. I understand that our conversations are necessary; however, you must know by now that I am exhausted. Our conversations drag on from afternoon till the sun goes down and half the time I couldn't be any less interested in what you have to say. I don't mean to be so harsh; in fact I have lied to you dear homework. It is not as much that you bore me, but rather that you are all consuming. You have taken away my time dear homework. And with my time you have taken away my words and my thoughts. I spend all my time talking to you homework, all my words belong to you. I find that my words are no longer going out to my friends and family and the people I love as much as they once did. Instead my words are landing upon pages and pages and pages of your endless notebooks. You have turned my thoughts into that of only five letters: A, B, C, D, and F. Homework don't you see? There is no time to think anymore. It is only you! It is only you and your five letters. Do you know what they tell me homework? They say that I am young and that these are some of the greatest years of my life. But I must tell you, for being only 17 years old my hands feel like they should belong to that of someone over 70 from all the history and math lessons they've written down. I never imagined that the "best years of my life" would be full of so many graphs and reading assignments. I know I've been dramatic about you homework and I must apologize. One day I will address this very same letter to taxes, or a troublesome co-worker; I know, I know. I know you're only here to help. I just hope it's worth it; I hope everything you have put me through has been worth it. I must tell you, you do have a funny way of helping homework. I must end my letter to you now; It seems I've already spent too much of my time and too many of my words on this message to you. I really should be starting my homework now.

- Sincerley, your adoring and completely exhausted student....or slave....whichever you prefer!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
