A Message To Donald Trump

Mr. Trump,

I am not one to openly speak up about politics but I feel that I, and many other people, must do so in order to protect our nation from falling into the wrong hands..and keep in mind that the size of your hands is completely irrelevant to this matter. Let’s face it, you are everything that a leader of this nation should not be: You are a racist, a misogynist, a homophobe, and most importantly a bully. Everything that you stand for seems to go against the American dream and the core ideals such as equality and opportunity for ALL (regardless of race, gender, or creed).

When you first declared that you would run for president, no one really took you seriously. I remember thinking to myself that you’re simply an elitist business tycoon trying to get publicity because you can’t stand to keep yourself out of the public eye. I also believed you would not make it very far with your campaign but congratulations because you certainly proved me wrong. Now, I can see how your slogan “Make America Great Again” sounds reassuring and vague enough to attract some Americans.

Your anger and hateful speech seem to lure people in as they mistakenly believe you are speaking the truth. But even with this success as a political candidate, you must be able to answer some hard questions, Mr.Trump. First of all, when you say you want to make America great, are you honestly thinking in the best interest of the nation or promising to create your own version of America? Because the America that many of us know and have come to cherish is not the same as the one that you are proposing. Looking back at our history of discriminatory practices, we have come a long way in terms of the way we view diversity and treat people of different backgrounds. I’m not saying that things are perfect yet but we have definitely progressed to the point where our melting pot of diversity is something to look favorably upon when compared to other nations. Your idea of building a wall around America and closing borders, on the other hand, is problematic because it will take us backwards when we should be moving forward, especially with globalization on the rise.

What is it that you could possibly be afraid of? I guess you’ve already given your answer to that in the many ignorant comments that you have made recently. The truth is you’re afraid of those that are different from you…those that aren’t white males with a lot of money. You’ve attacked Mexicans, you’ve attacked Muslims, and you’ve attacked women. You’ve even mocked people with disabilities and disrespected the lower class. I’ve seen it all and have read about it as you continue to make headlines and get the attention that you so crave. Yet, in your speeches and debates, I don’t think I have heard anything specific with regards to a commitment to actually improving the lives of Americans and proof that you are capable of leading us through the next four years if you do get elected.

Making comments about how all Mexicans are drug lords and rapists does nothing to fix the drug problem and instead fuels unjust hatred. Similarly, your anti-Muslim policy is extremely unattractive because it again attacks a particular religion while doing nothing to counter terrorism or danger. Lastly, I know all is fair in political comebacks but you crossed the line when you asked “if Hillary can’t satisfy her husband, then what makes her think she can satisfy America?” because it is both sexist and immature on your part.

I would like to think that responses like these would get you to realize your mistakes and change your attitudes. Unfortunately, I can picture you being unaffected by all of it because everything seems to be a “win-win” to you. I just want you to know that marginalizing a group of people is never okay. A president should bring the nation together, not play people against each other. That is why I will not vote for you.

Sincerely,

A concerned citizen

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
