If you’re in Greek life at Tulane, you’ve probably heard of the expressions “Greek love,” or “Panhel love.” But do you ever really stop and think about what that means? Panhel love isn’t something you just say to a friend who’s in a different sorority than you; it’s something you should follow and believe in as a sorority woman.
The Panhellenic Executive Council at Tulane University epitomizes “Panhel love” by coming together to form a governing body that overlooks all eight sororities on campus and makes decisions regarding the welfare, happiness and moral of the National Panhellenic Conference organizations on campus. As the Greek Life section on Tulane's website says:“The Panhellenic Council is the unifying, governing, and coordinating body of the National Panhellenic Conference groups at Tulane. It acts as a link between sororities, campus organizations, and administration, providing enrichment to all sorority members.”The eight NPC organizations at Tulane are Alpha Delta Pi, Alpha Epsilon Phi, Chi Omega, Kappa Alpha Theta, Kappa Kappa Gamma, Phi Mu, Pi Beta Phi and Sigma Delta Tau. The Panhellenic Council consists of two representatives (delegates) from each of these chapters and an executive council of twelve members selected from each chapter for their dedication and love of their individual house.
The following are the girls who sit on the executive council:
- Brenna Mossman, President
- Tara Wilson, President Elect
- Allison Margolis, Senior Vice President Recruitment
- Kelly Aucoin, Vice President Recruitment
- Emma Hunter, Vice President Activities
Jordana Balsam, Vice President Educational
Programming- Mia Lauter, Vice President Finance
- Cece Cole, Vice President Judicial
- Meg Boland, Vice President Philanthropy
- Hannah Katz, Vice President Public Relations
- Deepika Chandra, Vice President Records
- Olivia Frank, Vice President Scholarship
The executive council has a hand in everything Panhellenic related on Tulane’s campus. They help organize Greek Weekend, organize study breaks with Dunkin Donuts and Raising Canes for sorority women during finals weeks, bring speakers in to talk about events and situations pertaining to the Greek community, and most importantly, they deal with everything about recruitment. They make sure each house follows the rules and bylaws set forth by the executive council about recruitment, oversee the recruitment counselors (RC’s) during recruitment weekends, and overall make sure the potential new members going through the process are happy, stable and sure of their decisions.
As a member of the executive council, these women disaffiliate from their own organizations in November before recruitment starts in January. The reason for this is so that each exec member does her duty to help PNM's find the house they would fit best in, without having their own letters used as an influence or bias. We give up our letters to help PNM's find theirs, to use the expression.
Panhellenic is an important part of the Greek system, promoting and maintaining a stronger Greek Community. With an expected 800-900 women to go through the recruitment process - which is 150+ more from last year - the executive council has been on point and diligently working to ensure this recruitment season goes as smoothly as possible come next semester.
I am the Vice President of Educational Programming on the Panhellenic Executive Council, and I could not be more proud to know the women I currently serve with. They embody the true spirit of Panhellenic and what it stands for. Each woman on the council does her utmost to serve the Greek community and create a happy morale and strong bond among all the sororities. Even though I have sisters from my own organization, I could not be more thrilled to have gained eleven more “Panhellenic sisters” from this amazing position I have.
