Thomas Edison once said, “The doctor of the future will give no medicine, but will interest his patients in the care of the human frame, in diet, and in the cause and prevention of disease.” These days, it seems like every problem is treated with a prescription instead of looking at the root of the problem and analyzing how the problem could cease to exist. Medicine only masks the symptoms and never cures what is actually wrong. Therefore, prevention is so important!
As babies, we are born with a pH level of 7.4. Cancer cells thrive in acidic environments, therefore, it is important to maintain a pH level of 7 and above 7; otherwise known as an alkalinic state. Foods that are high in alkaline include fruits, nuts, legumes, and vegetables. So we must fuel our bodies with these types of foods, instead of meats that contain GMOs and antibiotics, processed foods like Twinkies that can literally survive Armageddon, and other foods that are high in sugar and fat. On the pH scale, battery acid id 1.9 and soda is a 2. Think about that? How are you treating your body? Can you eliminate things that are toxic to your body? It takes 6 months to detoxify the body, so why not start now. Because in 24 weeks, you will wish you had started today. You can invest in good health now, or pay the doctor later!
According to Shape magazine, when the liver is overworked, toxic residue begins to cause blockage and therefore causes inflammation which leads to obesity. Furthermore, when you throw stress into the mix, fat begins to build up in the liver as well. You may have heard of cortisol, and when this hormone spikes, we tend to crave things like sugar and foods that are high in fat. This leads to weight gain around the belly. So instead of picking up the chips and candy when feeling stressed, it is much better to lace up those kicks and go for a run. I promise you that it will be much more satisfying to be dripping in sweat and have a clearer mind then to plop down on the couch and stuff your face. But once you realize that working out is better than grabbing that bag of Doritos, you must also then fuel your body with the right nutrients so that your can detox your liver.
Though there are many proteins and muscle milks out there, no powder or pill is ever going to replace the actual nutrients that are found in what the Earth provides for us. For example, think of an apple skin. No wonder the popular saying came about..."an apple a day, keeps the doctor away." As minuscule as it is, there are so many nutrients found in the apple skin and it actually cannot be replicated in another form. It cannot be formulated into something you just swallow down with a gulp of water.
Many people just say that “anything can give you cancer”, and that is basically true in these days. There are too many chemicals in the foods, drinks, and even skincare products that we put in and on our bodies. So, while sometimes, cancer is genetic, I would like to think that we can do as much as we can as individuals to fuel our bodies with the right nutrients and keep our pH balanced so that we can beat not just cancer, but other diseases, like high blood pressure and diabetes, as well as fight for our mental health and provide our brain with the chemicals it needs to stay happy!
On that note,while I know medicine does indeed help with mental health, as I myself have been on depression and anxiety meds, I know that when I eat the foods that my body needs and when I am active and make sure I get my daily fitness in, my frame of mind consistently remains positive. It was once said that "The food you eat can either be the safest and most powerful form of medicine or the slowest form of poison." A slice of bread here and there and a soda once in a while won't kill you, but when you addicted to these things, they will start creating problems. Therefore, as I circle back to the beginning, preventative care is crucial. The things we do today, may affect our tomorrow. Though it is never guaranteed, shouldn't we do our best to increase our longevity on this beautiful earth by taking control of our health?!
