With the newly released movie adaptation now showing in theaters, JoJo Moyes’ "Me Before You" is quickly grabbing the attention of readers (and breaking their hearts too). From one bookworm to another, here’s why you should make the story of Will Traynor and Louisa Clark part of your summer.
It’s romance, but not. For readers who don’t typically enjoy the romance genre, Moyes’ novel is not exactly a “boy meets girl” sort of story. Sure, it’s a tale of unlikely love, which may be a turn-off for some adventure-seeking readers. But "Me Before You" isn’t centered around romance. Think "The Fault in our Stars" or "Gone Girl." A tear-inducing book with a little bit of love can be just as complex and meaningful as anything else, romance or not.
Moyes deals with some controversial medical ethics. In all seriousness, Will and Louisa’s story brings up some pretty controversial medical topics. Without giving too much away, Lou is faced with an impossibly difficult situation involving some highly contentious medical choices, and almost every character is quick to share his/her opinion. What may at first seem like mindless romance quickly becomes thought-provoking and even ethically debatable. While Will and Lou's intertwining stories are more than remarkable, the seriousness of Will's medical situation is bound to leave you thinking, even after their story is over.
And of course, the message. Unlike Lou, we may not all live our entire lives within a five-mile radius. But Will’s mantra of living to the fullest while we’re still able to is still an important concept. Lou’s many outrageous adventures (and misadventures) are a perfect representation of stepping outside one's comfort zone. This summer, we could all use a little reminder to Live Boldly, and that’s exactly what this irresistible story provides.
