Maybe it’s not the town.
We have cried over our GPA’s and rolled our eyes when we see the posts on Facebook from those celebrating a 4.0. Almost all the students are gone, and suddenly the town that was constantly full of life and memories seems dead. And it gets you thinking; maybe it’s not how great the town is, but the people instead.
Where almost every Saturday you could hear, “Raider Power” being yelled throughout the town. Everyone bleeds scarlet and black, and no matter how big the loss or how sweet the win, we are proud to be Red Raiders. Tortillas fly through the air and our smiles would get a little bigger when the victory bells would ring out. In these moments the thought of your Monday morning test had no affect on you because right there in the Jones is where we all belonged. We were united as one and nothing could break us apart.

You never seem to feel too lonely during the semester here at Texas Tech. Classes are hard, relationships are harder, but somehow the people you were put in class with your freshman year are still the ones that help hold you together when everything else is falling apart. If you need someone to join you for queso, or someone to pull an all-nighter in the library with you, most of us are lucky and have more than one person that would jump at the option. Lubbock helps bring you the type of friendships that will truly last you a lifetime.
Everything here is a little sweeter. Maybe it's the tea and the blue bell ice cream, but I also think it is the souls of the people we come into contact with every single day. The friendly smile you see walking to class, the basketball coach buying your lunch in the SUB, or the person sitting next to you in class that offers to help you with that problem you just don’t understand. It's the sweetness of the sky every night as the sun begins to set and everyone rushes out to get the perfect picture because no one wants to miss a moment like that.
Lubbock, Texas.
A place full of happiness, guns up, and a whole lot of memories. And though I have fallen in love with this town, I do believe we give it too much credit. Lubbock by itself is not amazing; in fact with all the college students gone during Christmas break, it is actually boring. The amazing part of it is it is the common factor thousands of students share. It is our common factor in our friendships, relationships, and sweetest memories.
My Lubbock pride runs deep, but my pride for how beautiful and awesome my friends are runs even deeper. So yeah, maybe this town isn’t all that. Maybe it is just another town for a month when Tech grows silent. But once that month ends, this town becomes a place full of love and excitement; a place for adventure and memories. Maybe it’s not the town that is so special, but the people in it.
God Bless and Wreck 'Em.
