May We Never Forget 9/11

May We Never Forget 9/11
Lisa Myers

To most people this upcoming week is just the second week of September. Some may still be getting back into the swing of things from a celebratory three-day weekend that was full of family, friends, barbecuing, and soaking up that last bit of summertime weather. But for a select few this upcoming week entails a day that they still cannot bear to relive.

For many Americans September 11 comes and goes each year, and for that day we recall that terrifying morning. It might not be until September 10 or even the day of September 11, but eventually everyone comes to remember that day. We all feel that same sense of sheer panic that an entire nation felt at once just 14 years ago.

But as that day ends, so do the memories, memorial video montages, and mourning posts made on social media. Many move on with their lives up until the following anniversary.

For a small percentage of Americans that day lives with them and replays each day of their life.

This column is in remembrance of my cousin, Steven Strobert, who was killed in the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001.

Steven worked as a broker with the bond trading company Cantor Fitzgerald, and his office was located on the 105th floor of one of the towers.

Steven experienced firsthand panic of what a bombing attack was on February 26, 1993 when the Twin Towers were bombed for the first time. Six people were killed that morning and over 1,000 were injured.

Steven had to descend down a plethora of staircases in order to evacuate the building safely, but he ran into a struggling pregnant woman who could not make it down the stairs. Steven helped escort this woman down over 100 flights of stairs to safety.

For Steven this type of behavior was normal; he always was one to help anyone who needed it and at any time.

To Steven September 11 was just another normal Tuesday. Steven walked in through those doors, headed up to his office, called his wife Tara just as he had always done to let her know that he had arrived to work safely, and started his day.

Steven had no idea that that would be the last time he ever walked into those doors and step into his office, he did not know that that would be the last time he talked to his wife, and he did not know that he would never walk out of those towers again.

His family said after the attacks that he was probably in his office when the towers were hit.

The history.com staff in 2010 recapped the morning of the attacks as the following:

On September 11, 2001, at 8:45 a.m. on a clear Tuesday morning, an American Airlines Boeing 767 loaded with 20,000 gallons of jet fuel crashed into the north tower of the World Trade Center in New York City. The impact left a gaping, burning hole near the 80th floor of the 110-story skyscraper.

With Steven’s office being located on the 105th floor, he was killed instantaneously on impact.

On September 11, 2001 my family lost a piece to our puzzle and to this day we are still not the same without Steven.

Steven’s family founded and created the Steven Strobert foundation in remembrance of the life Steven lived.

The Steven Strobert Foundation gives their proceeds earned through various philanthropic events directly to local charities, and then reinvests a portion of the proceeds so that the foundation can stay around indefinitely.

This column's purpose is to inform. To inform many that although September 11 comes and goes each year and for that day this country all mourns as one, there are families that still mourn every day of their lives and will continue to do so until they die.

To inform people that there are still many out there who cannot step foot at the memorial yet, because they can’t bear to see their loved one's name engraved into the memorial.

To inform people that there are many still grieving even though it has been 14 years since the attacks, and that I still close my eyes and see that morning unfold in my head just if it were yesterday.

I still see myself walking down the stairs to find my mother sobbing on the couch watching the TV replay what happened in New York City and to my family that morning.

I remember how scared we all were and the amount of pain we felt.

This post is intended to let people know that this day cannot be forgotten. For Steven’s sake we can never forget. We as a country owe it to all those that were lost that day, and all the families that are still mourning their loved ones.

May we never forget the horrific attacks and all the lives that were lost on September 1, 2001.

This one is for you, Steven.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
