Why Masculinity Hurts Just As Much

Life's problems cannot be solved by "growing a pair"

Why Masculinity Hurts Just As Much

As a woman, I am bombarded every single day with the different ways that women fall short of expectations. Women are supposed to act a certain way, talk a certain way and live a certain way. Ideas are flooding social media about how women need to be raised in order to be equal to men and how women should not be put down for who they are. The one thing we are forgetting, however, is what about men?

Every day, men deal with social expectations that they sweep under the rug. It's the unfortunate truth of the matter. Men are expected to be masculine, and to be stronger than women, but then, when they appear to be stronger than women, they are criticized because they are "oppressing females." But why?

When we believe that men should be the dominant ones, the strong ones, the tough ones, we are giving them unrealistic expectations to live up to. It is the exact same thing as expecting all women to be tall, thin, with perfect olive skin and long beautiful hair. While the topic of female equality is important, we cannot forget about men in the process.

Simply put, life's problems cannot be solved with phrases such as; "Be a man", "Grow a pair", or " Man up".

It is tough to see through our ordinary day the different masculine ideals that take place, but when it is written out, it is much easier to see that it is difficult for men too. Lets take a look at all the ways where men's expectations are just downright unreasonable. Men should be the breadwinners, and their wives should never make more money than them- (women should have equal pay, but men should be in a higher paid profession). Men should have big biceps and wear shirts that show them off. How much they bench indicates their level on the food chain. Men should come home and drink beer and watch football. Wait, he doesn't like football? Is he gay? Of course, lesbians are hot, but gay men are "gross"? Men should provide for their children financially, but should not be caught at dance class. Men should not get too close to their male friends without saying "no homo." Also, men should dominate their women in the bedroom, men are in control always. Also, there's no way he got raped by a woman, he "got it up" didn't he? He must have enjoyed it.

This list doesn't even begin to cover the basics. There are many things that men deal with on a daily basis. While equality for females is important, we have to also make sure that when we bring up females, we don't bring down males in the process. Men deserve our attention too, because the stereotypes that I have listed are unfair, and cause a lot of harm as well.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
