DJ Marshmello, the world wide known masked DJ took the booth at the Senior Ballroom in Pullman on September 22.
After performing in Asia just a couple of days before, Marshmello made his way to Pullman, Washington. WSU is still in shock on how we got this famous DJ to a little town like Pullman.
Do not let this little town fool you, however. Just because Pullman is not as big of a city as Seattle, it does not mean Mello Gang is not here and it does not mean we are not ready to party.
Let us step take a few steps backward. If you are new to Marshmello’s music, his fans are known as Mello Gang. You can find Mello Gang wearing their homemade helmets like the one that Marshmello wears. It is easy to spot a fellow Mello Gang at festivals and concerts with their helmets, flags and shirts.
Tickets were sold out on the day that they went on sale, in a little less than five hours. This event was one of the most successful events that SEB (the Student Entertainment Board) has put on.
The openers set the bars pretty high for Marshmello himself. WSU students, Josh Korn and Sean Ratcliffe opened with their set, getting the crowd ready for the show. This was an extremely remarkable opportunity for the duo because this was their first time opening for someone as well-known as Marshmello.
Mello Gang stacked the senior ballroom, the most crowded that I’ve ever witnessed. It truly felt like a rave on the middle of campus. WSU Mello Gang were meeting each other and bonding over the music of the beloved Marshmello. Peace, love, unity and respect is the motto in the rave community. WSU without a doubt lived up to that motto.
WSU has a vast Electronic Dance Music (EDM) fan base, so Marshmello coming here was major for EDM lovers. There have been plenty of DJs that have come to Pullman in the past, but no one as high profile as Marshmello.
Marshmello has quickly risen to fame in the last year. He gained recognition by remixing songs by other DJ’s like Jack Ü and Zedd, and is now releasing his own songs like his hit single “Alone.”
Music aside, Marshmello captivates his fans because no one knows his identity. Never performing without his iconic Marshmello helmet, the mystery of his identity remains a secret. Many wonder why hide who you are? According to his Facebook, he “just want[s] to make good music, that doesn't require you knowing who I am.”
Marshmello has had the opportunity to play at major EDM festivals this year such as EDC Las Vegas, Fvded in the Park, and Tomorrowland, which is why everyone was so surprised to hear he would be performing in this little town we call home.
Whether he just had an open date in his planner or SEB got lucky, we are forever thankful that we had the opportunity to see Marshmello live. He didn’t disappoint, that’s for sure.
Mello-gang forever.
