I was part of a movement. I was part of an event that I guarantee will be in the history books. I can’t wait to tell my kids that I participated in the Women’s March of 2017.
Coming into Saturday January 21st, 2017, I had no previous plan of joining the march. In fact, Trump’s entire Inauguration was forgotten by me. I don’t recall anyone even mentioning the actual Inauguration on the day itself.
The only buzz I heard about the day was the meme worthy moments captured of Michelle Obama’s face resembling Jim Halpert’s infamous camera glances on ‘The Office’ or how Melania Trump resembled like a member of Harry Potter book’s Fleur Delacour’s boarding school.
But the day of the march, just going through social media, I saw many of my peers from all over taking a stand in their respective communities. Some of my friends from school were feeling hyped and wanted to join here in Omaha. So we researched and found out it was Saturday night and made a quick makeshift cardboard poster to showcase our support.
It was probably around 6:30 pm when two of my gal pals and I entered the march. It was crowded with people of all ages, genders, and races. This was a picture of the American Melting Pot. We marched through Omaha’s Old Market and headed back to Century Link Stadium for an hour long march. I honestly felt safe with the people around me and bystanders were supportive of the cause. The police of Omaha ensured the safety of everyone.
There’s debate of sorts on “why even march?”. I can’t speak for all but to me it’s a way to show your support in an outwardly display on the rights you want to emphasize the importance of. I don’t understand the anger behind those who opposed this act. It was completely peaceful. People gathered to vocalize their woes and their hopes. Of course there was directs attacks on the new administration but was there ever an administration everyone supported?
We Americans have the freedom of speech and expression. For thousands, this march was a way to speak up and showcase to our new president and to the world the way we want our country to be. A country of equality.
I’m super proud to say I was part of this historic event. I only hope that Mr. Trump take this act into consideration throughout his term.
