On January 21, 2017, I joined half a million women in the streets of America's capital for the Women's March.
Now before you see a warning sign in the shape of the letters RADICAL FEMINIST and click back before reading the rest of this article, please hear me out.
First I'd like to say that I don't want to bomb the White House. I don't want President Trump or any of his staff to be assassinated. I would never wish death upon anyone and I don't think it would solve any problems. That being said I do see a lot of problems in the governing we've been told to expect from Trump.
So here are my reasons for joining the Women's March.
I'm a feminist.
I believe that men and women and everyone should be equal. I don't think a woman's worth can be judged by the way she looks. I don't think that a famous man, or woman, has the right to touch any part of a woman whenever they want. Trust me when I say I'm not just jumping on the bandwagon. I've been a feminist for a while. In fact here's the first article I ever wrote for the Oydssey. Here's the link. https://www.theodysseyonline.com/femimism
I believe that Planned Parenthood should continue to be funded by the government. The government provides more than 40% of Planned Parenthoods revenue. With that money, they provide quality care and procedures for women's health. If it's abortions you're worried about, then it's worth mentioning that Planned Parenthood prevents more abortions than they perform, because they also help clients with birth control. They also test for STD's in both women and men. They do really important work. If Trump wants to but a stop to them he needs to at least be able to use the words; Hillary Clinton and bathroom without getting grossed out and acting like a middle schooler.
Racism isn't ok.
I'm not saying that President Trump is a racist, per say. But I won't pretend to ignore the fact that white supremacists have 'hailed' trump and he didn't disavow the KKK when they announced they supported him.
He announced that he wants to form a Muslim registry and attacked a Gold Star family who spoke out against him at the DNC because they were Muslim.
President Trump began his campaign with the promise that he'd build a wall between America and Mexico. Ignoring the issues that arise, like that deporting 11 million immigrants will be getting rid of 6% of the American workforce, the wall itself is estimated to cost something like $400 billion dollars and would go over private and tribal land. Just deporting all the illegal immigrants would cost between $420 billion and $619 billion. It's completely illogical, but instead of addressing any of these issues, reorganizing the plan so it works, or explaining it in more detail he just charges on. Although now instead of Mexico playing for it, they're going to give congress an IOU. So basically we're paying for a wall we don't even want or pay for.
Climate change is a thing.
Climate change is real. Bill Nye doesn't draw those charts the night before he shows them on TV. It's a real thing. The world is getting hotter and we are quickly approaching the point of no return. I wrote another article on climate change https://www.theodysseyonline.com/its-time-to-chang... that's the link.
But no matter how many articles anybody writes or how many charts they show it seems as though he'll never believe it. Yes, if we do get rid of coal completely we need to address the unemployment. But it's a bridge that can be crossed and isn't the Earth and it's future worth something.
To really get across the severity of the situation here is an excerpt from President Donald J. Trump's White House website "President Trump is committed to eliminating harmful and unnecessary policies such as the Climate Action Plan and the Waters of the U.S. rule."
LGBT community won't be ignored.
It's worth mentioning that during the campaign President Trump said 'he'd be a better friend to the LGBT community then Hillary Clinton'. Now that you've all had a good laugh we can move on.
So when the climate change and LGBT pages went down on the official White House website everyone freaked out, but we were all told that it was all part of the digital transfer, which made sense. Not the climate change page is back up (not that there was much there to be happy about) but there's no LBGT page or Civil Rights for that matter.
I'm not quite sure exactly what this means but my personal guess is this can't be good. What with Trump's passed with people who have a skin color darker than white, that's not sprayed on, and Mike Pence who believes in conversion therapy and has voted against the protection of the LGBT community.
The civil rights movement was one of the most important and pivotal parts in American history. It's what happened when normal civilians go out of their way to speak up to the government. And the work that activists like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. started isn't finished yet and I don't know if the Trump Pence administration thinks that ignoring this will get it to go away but it won't.
At the end of the day...
I'm a patriot. I think the United States of America is one of the most wonderful places on this earth. To me, a few of the reasons that make it so great are the principles it was based on. The idea that everyone is created equal and that the people run the government. But I don't see these in Donald Trump.
The Statue of Liberty says "Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!" That's what this great nation was based on. I marched for Lady Liberty and what she stood for then and what she stands for now. We were intended for something better than walls and oppression and conversion therapy.
