College basketball is one of the most unpredictable sporting events to ever grace this planet. The sheer suspense between shots can be cut with a knife. Many teams are usually at the top such as Kentucky, Duke, and Kansas. However, every other team is itching to get a chance to knock off one of these perennial powerhouses. While the NCAA tournament is filled with suspense, the Big 12 tournament may surpass all other conferences in the end. With 7 out of the 10 teams in the conference looking at a potential tournament berth, it is widely considered the most competitive conference in the nation. It has even been pegged as the toughest conference in the nation by many NCAA basketball experts. Any team has the ability to beat any other team in the conference, which will prove to be a fun conference tournament.
Rounding out the top of the conference is Kansas. Finishing first in the Big 12 the past 11 years is quite the feat. Kansas has been a power house ever since Bill Self took over and there are no signs of looking back. However, the conference is a lot more balanced this year. Kansas does not have the usual across the board NBA talent as they have in the past. Thus, making the field more even.
After Kansas is a plethora of teams that can argue as being the second best team in the conference. Such teams include Iowa State, Oklahoma, West Virginia, and even Baylor. All of these teams have a legitimate argument at being the number 2 team in the conference. All have very different playing styles from each other that complement each specific team very well. While these teams might not have the true talent that Kansas has as a team, they make up for it with grit, effort, fundamentals and attention to detail.
Now just because two teams didn't finish in the top of the conference, it doesn't mean that they are walkovers. Both Oklahoma St. and Texas have had major wins and a solid resume. Both teams have been ranked throughout the year; including Texas who was ranked in the top 10 in the nation to start the year! It just goes to show how deep and competitive of a conference it has been thus far this year. Both of these teams have the potential to knock off of the top teams in the conference, and don't be surprised if they do.
The Big 12 had the best non-conference record this year. One of the many reasons that experts have picked it as the best conference in college basketball. The fact that every team has to play each other twice also allows for a legitimate, no argument regular season champion. It also sets up for an unpredictable, action packed finale titled the Big 12 tournament. So strap up and enjoy the ride because it is going to be a good one.
