The survival of the fittest no longer only applies to people, but to corporations competing with mom and pop stores as well. For as many corporations there are in U.S., there are twice as many mom and pop stores. Many have gone unnoticed, and some have gone out of business, but mom and pop stores are still surviving.
It seems as if large corporate businesses feel like they have the right to open and start a business where they seem fit, with little or no disregard to the other businesses around them. And they have the right to do so if they think profits will be good in that area. Then, as smart business people, they will do what they can to maximize profits. An example of a scenario like this is the New York Wal-Mart vs small businesses. Wal-Mart wanted to create a new location in a place where small businesses thrived from the local population. In this case, Wal-Mart won and established a store that hurt many small business owners. The main argument for the creation of this Wal-Mart and many others was for the growth of jobs in the area. But for how many jobs gained did small business owners lose their jobs?
Many large corporations are similar (Wal-Mart, Target, Kmart etc). They sell the same products at a comparatively lower price than mom and pop stores. People are constantly trying to get their money's worth of the products they buy. Because there are so many large corporations concentrated in one area, it is easier for people to go to them to seek what they need as opposed to looking for it in a small business. These are some main reasons why large corporations survive better than small businesses.
Mom and pop stores will survive. They have characteristics that big corporate businesses don't have. Each small business offers its own unique experience along with different main attractions. A smaller atmosphere provides for a better customer satisfaction because there is more one-on-one time with customers. There is diversity and there is catering to individual wants, as opposed to a select menu of things to choose from. As the saying goes, supports your local economy, rather than put more money into the hands of people who already have enough money.
In the survival of the fittest with large corporations and small business, the one who will survive is the one who offers more to a customer. Large corporations are uniform, with stores offering similar products at different prices. A small business will offer you a variety of things to keep your attention. A small business can relate to more people, as they are trying to survive just as we are. Try something new, or choose what you are comfortable with.
