Making The World A Better Place

Making others happy is never a chore.

Everyone is familiar with the warm, satisfying feeling that comes with making others happy. Whether you gave someone a compliment, helped them with homework, or simply told them good morning, it feels good to know you've brightened someone's day just a little bit.

A lot of people really like doing this, but think it's too difficult to do all the time. Making others happy is actually a lot easier than you think. You probably do it all the time and don't even realize. Doing something small can go a long way. Sometimes all people need is for someone to smile at them in the hallway or an invite to lunch. You should always strive to try making other happy as often as you can.

This doesn't mean to ignore yourself or do things that you don't like just for the sake of others. Always feel comfortable and confident in what you're doing. Like I said, something you think isn't a big deal might mean a lot to someone else. You never know what someone is going through, and a simple smile in their direction might improve their day. There are definitely a lot of quick, easy ways to make someone happy, and they're all totally worth it.

You can start by complimenting someone. Just letting someone know you like their outfit, or that you think they're really funny can make them incredibly happy. It'll make you feel good too since you created that happiness. Other simple things include holding the door open for people, encouraging your classmates and friends when they're nervous, or even just listening to what someone has to say. That means put down your phone and give them your full attention, and maybe dish out some advice for them too.

It's been proven that making others happier helps us to live a happier life ourselves. You’ll feel happier because you know you have done a good thing. Your self-esteem will go up, too, just knowing that you have that ability. You tend to be treated by others as you treat them. It's the golden rule most people try to live by. If you make other people happy, chances are they'll try to do the same for you. Plus, the way you treat and think about others also tends to be the way you treat and think about yourself. It's critical to our mental health that we live positively and do our best to make ourselves happy.

If we can focus on ourselves for a little while and manage to become happier because of it, it will be much easier to do the same for others. If everyone adopted this way of thinking, the world would honestly be a much brighter, happier place. As a wise man (Misha Collins) once said; "Be kind to yourself so you can be happy enough to be kind to the world."

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
