Making The Summer Count

Making The Summer Count

At the end of every school year, I think the majority of the student population can agree that they are thinking the same thing, "How do we make this summer one to remember?" Although, like always, I don't have all the answers, but I do have a few tips to make your goal of an awesome summer a reality.

Make a memory. This is really easy because in almost everything you do, you make memories. Sometimes bad and sometimes good, whatever memory you make it leads to the making of your summer story. Write your experiences down or take pictures along the way to remember all the excitement and adventure you experienced throughout the summer.

Make a change.

You have three months to do something. Anything. Why not let it be the time to change a part of you that you struggled with last year? It could be changing your eating habits to feel more healthy. It could be your attitude to have a more positive outlook on life. Whatever it is, change is good and can lead you to a better start to your next school semester.

Make a mistake.

Intentionally or unintentionally, this will more than likely happen to you this summer. Don't dwell on it; learn from it. Mistakes while you're young are good learning opportunities and ways you can experience life. Sometimes a mistake can lead to a crazy story or

Make some time for yourself.

It doesn't have to be a huge amount of time that you are alone. Take a trip to the mall or grab a blanket and lie out in your yard to stargaze. Slow down, lie down and remind yourself how small you really are. Sometimes it's easy to forget that although we have time away from the stress of homework and studying, summers can get pretty busy, too. Take a moment to focus on yourself, de-stress and regroup.

Make a leap.

A leap of faith that is. Take a chance and do something spontaneous and wild. Something you never would have thought to do in the past. Take a day trip to another state, have a water balloon fight, or call a friend you haven't talked to in a while. You're only young once, and summer will come to an end sooner than you realize, giving way to days filled with classes and homework. You might as well do something a little crazy every now and then.

Make the most out of disappointment.

You come across so many different people that you are bound to accomplish this one way or another. If you're stuck on a plane because of a delayed flight, ask the person next to you where they are headed. Be friendly with the people you work with. Sometimes the most exciting and wild stories come from plans that didn't turn out the way you had wanted them to.

Make relationships.

I'm not just talking about romantic relationships, but friendships as well. Spend some time to get to know the people you work with, hang out with, or see on a daily basis. Lots of people have stories to tell and can add a little excitement to your life; you just have to initiate the conversation.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
