The Olympics seem to be all everyone is talking about. Ever since the started up after the opening ceremony, that’s all that is on social media or television. Let me just say I am loving it. The Olympics are my favorite thing to watch weather it’s summer or winter. I secretly think “Yah I can do that” when watching a sport. Knowing full well that it’s so much harder than I can imagine and all these athletes just make it look so simple. With every day and all the different Olympic events that are going on, so many historic moments are also taking place. If you haven’t been obsessing over the Olympics like I have, let me catch you up on some of the major events that have happened. Here are some of the top ten Olympic events you should be hearing about.
- Michael Phelps is actually a fish and wins his 22nd gold medal
- Michael Phelps has also now one four straight gold medals in a row
- Michael Phelps also managed to have four gold medals consecutively in one event.
- This is the first year women are aloud to compete at the Olympics wearing a hijab
- Katie Ledecky also smashes two swimming world records
- The U.S. women’s gymnastic team names themselves the Final Five in honor of their coach leaving and being the last five to compete before they narrow the team down to four competitors at the next Olympics
- The Final Five get gold in the team round of gymnastics and
- The U.S. womens gymnastics team also comes in 1 and 2 in the individuals. With Simone Biles with gold and Aly Raisman taking the silver
- Simone Manuel broke an Olympic record in the 100m freestyle and was the first African American to win an individual gold at an Olympics in swimming
- 10. Simone Biles also is the first American woman to have both the World Championship and the Olympic title at the same time.
This is only the beginning of Olympic history though for the U.S. team. I’ve probably even left a few major events out that have happened. So far the events only contain a few sports like swimming and gymnastics, but the other events are starting up so I’m sure we will have other historic events to come. For now go team U.S.A
