Making Friends At College 101

College can be scary, but making friends shouldn't be.

Kayla Graser

Hello incoming freshman!

First off welcome to the big leagues. College is not going to be as scary as you think it is going to be. The one thing that worried me the most going into college is that I didn’t know anybody going to my school except for maybe 5 or 6 people from my high school. So here are some different ways/ideas to help making friends a little bit easier.

Make friends with your roommate

Being friends with your roommate is going to be so helpful during those first few welcome weekend events where you don’t know anyone to go with. Your roommate is most likely in the same boat you are so you both will have someone for the first couple of weeks to go to lunch with and those get to know you events.

Go walk through your hall and talk to people with their doors open

I know it sounds really weird and really creepy, but trust me when I say it is great to have friends in your dorm because you have girls to have late movie nights and girls’ nights with.

Don’t sit in the back by yourself in classes

Be brave and go sit right in the middle of the group of people and make friends with people in your classes. It is great to make friends in your classes because you have more people to hang out with and grab lunch with, but you also have people who you can text if you miss the homework or need to form a study group.

Go to ALL of the Welcome Events

You are going to meet so many new people at the welcome weekend events because everyone is also trying to make friends. Plus, they are super fun!!

Realize that other people are in the same boat as you

Most people going into college don’t know a lot of people, and even if they do they want to meet new people away from their high school friends. It’s awkward for everyone trying to make new friends so just go for it!

Making friends in college is like speed dating

“Hi my name is Kayla. What year are you? What’s your major? What dorm do you live in?” Go up to people and just introduce yourself. It’s going to be outside of your comfort box, but you will meet soooo many new people doing this.

Lastly,

Cherish your friendships because these people are going to be your friends for life. I met so many people this year, some friends stayed and some went, but I met people who I can see myself being friends with for the rest of my life. So go make as many friends as you can, because college is so much more friend with best friends to share the experiences with.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
