Making Abortions Illegal Is The First Step Towards The Reality Of "The Handmaid's Tale"

With an investigation looming over the president's head, he is determined to keep all his campaign promises made to his base. With that in mind, last week, Mr. Trump convinced Justice Kennedy to retire with empty promises along with the influence of the justice's son, who, by the way, has a business relationship with the president. Roe v. Wade decision is now in jeopardy and the nation wants to fight back but does not know how.

Trump dies from a massive heart attack during his second term in office and Mr. Pence becomes president. As the new president, his first executive order is to govern by "Jesus Christ Our Lord and Savior." Pence replaces cabinet members with Conservative Christians and theocratic rule begins to take hold state by state. The southern and mid-western states are the first to take theocracy as their governing rule. There is an economic war for ten years while Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Nevada, Oregon, Washington, California, and Hawaii eventually secede from the union.

Fast forward twenty-five years. Roe v. Wade has been reversed and abortions are once again illegal across the Christian States of America. Not only did the Supreme Court reverse the ruling, they set a precedent by allowing the Conservative Christians to write the law preventing any form of abortion as well as making it a crime to have premarital sex. Calling it murder to perform or get an abortion and when caught will be sentenced to death. The Theocratic government enacts a registry for girls that requires them to register within 24 hours of their first menstruation and see a doctor monthly to perform a checkup to ensure virginity.

Most single women will travel to Mexico or Canada to get an abortion, and if they are caught know they will die. Once the government realized it was possible for women to travel to a different county and get an abortion they put stricter tariffs on all countries that performed them. Visas to and from these countries are routinely denied and like Cuba, eventually, embargos of commercial, economic, and financial are imposed.

Even so, the birth rate is declining. Men and women are not permitted to have sex unless it is specifically for procreation during a marriage. Anyone caught having premarital sex will be prosecuted with jail and in many cases castration. Men's testosterone levels begin to drop as masturbation becomes a crime and is punishable in all Christian States of America with prison and in some cases, frequent offenders are given drugs to prevent them from sexual desires. Prostitution and porn are only found in underground networks and sexual diseases that were once treatable are now an epidemic in high schools and colleges. 70% of the girls graduating from high school are already married and either pregnant or had a child while attending high school and never go to college.

It is not a crime to rape a fertile woman and impregnate her if she is your wife. The assault on women happens every 30 seconds in the Christian States of America and 90% are never reported. Many women take measures to abort the fetus on their own, and most do it if they learn it is a female. Eventually, the government will punish a woman if the child is born dead which begins the onslaught of unwanted newborns left at hospitals, and fire stations. Many states are required to convert old college dorms into orphanages. Each state enacts different laws on dealing with these issues and it is against the law to move from state to state if your wife is fertile or pregnant.

Saturday, July 4, 2043, is no longer a nationwide celebration of United States of America's independence. No parades, barbeques, or pool parties. Fireworks are outlawed along with beer, wine, and alcohol. Churches will open at 6:00 am as usual.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
