Last Friday I went up to my sister's room and I while I was looking at her multiple Nyx lipsticks I asked her if she thought the "Cherry Skies" red would be a good color for me. She told me to try it on and see how it looked; as I applied the lipstick I head her giggling behind me. I asked her why she was laughing at me and she said because you look like a 5-year-old trying to put lipstick on for the first time. I laughed and then it occurred to me that I wasn't very skilled at applying any kind of makeup, I usually just tried my best and hoped that I didn't end up looking like a clown.
This summer I bought my very first beauty blender and again my little sister (a cosmetology student) showed me how to use it. I had been using a foundation brush before and I realized I couldn't believe that I had gone this long without a beauty blender.
In my 19 years of life, and many years of applying makeup, I've never truly known what was good for my skin or how to apply it. I told my sister that before I went back to school I needed her to teach me a simple routine that I could easily do in the morning. She again laughed at me and said that she promised she would. I've never been one for doing fancy makeup and I don't always wear it everyday, but I would like to have a routine that I could do before class.
There seems to have been a makeup craze where girls have taken to learning how to do neat things with their makeup and spending a lot of money at Sephora. I never really got into that craze, but I appreciate anyone who can do cool things with makeup, even though I will never understand how someone could spend $20 on a tube of lipstick.
I think that a lot of people use their makeup as a form of art and expression and to me that is really cool. Many people use the phrase, "she's painting her face" which is almost true because by using makeup as a form of art, it is similar to painting. When I watch my sister do her makeup, I wonder how she can do that and get it perfect every time. I joke about how she has to start getting ready three hours before everyone else because almost all of that time will be spent doing her makeup.
Thinking of her doing her makeup and having her demonstrate how to do things shows me that I'm not as smart about everything that I think I am. I would like to give credit to all of the girls who know how to do makeup and thank them for being willing to teach others through YouTube, Instagram and social media videos. And a huge thank you to my sister who is willing to put up with my lack of makeup skills.
