I sat down to write my article this week and realized I wasn’t quite sure what I wanted to write about. There are so many options it can be overwhelming to think about what direction to take my writing. The more I thought about it the more I came to the same conclusion. Trying to figure out a writing topic is the same as trying to figure out what I want to do with my life, something that I still have no clue about by the way.
Life has so many possibilities. You can write your story any way you want. That’s a personal choice made by you and only you. But what if you don’t know? What if you’re sitting in front of a blank page with all of the possibility right there but you just can’t seem to find the words to form it?
My answer is this: you don’t have to know, and that’s okay. Life is forever changing. You aren’t the person you were 10 years ago and you probably won’t be the same person 10 years from now. Forget about deadlines and expectations and think about what you want. Sure, there are so many things factoring into life that aren’t necessarily in an odyssey article but simplify it for yourself.
Do things that matter to you and that make YOU happy. Eventually, you’ll figure everything else out. Don’t hold yourself back because you’re unsure, scared or worried that it won’t work out. Life has a funny way of doing that all on its own.
Also, don’t worry about the pestering from your friends and family with their questions and comments about what you’re doing. “What are you going to do after college?” “What kind of job can you get with that major?” “That won’t make you a lot of money.”
WHO CARES.
Go for that job even if you think you can’t get it, buy that dress even if you think you can’t pull it off, eat that extra scoop of ice cream because you can and you want to. Life is too short to care about anyone’s opinion except your own.
If I’ve learned anything this far in life it’s to do what you want and what you feel is best for you. At the end of the day YOU are your top priority and if someone calls you selfish for that, they’re wrong.
