Always Make Time For These Things, Even In The Craziness Of College

Because college is much more than eating, sleeping, and studying.

Always make time for school work. Always make time for sleep. Always make time for food. Yes, you've heard these things over and over. But here are just as important things to make time for in the craziness of college that you may not have been told.

Always make time for exercise, it will let you run off your steam and make you feel better. But also, always make time for spontaneous ice cream and crispy Kreme runs (yes TOTALLY worth the 30 min drive). Eating feelings actually works too.

Always make time to say hi and talk to someone on the way to class, it can make your day and someone else's day better. But also, always make time to have some quiet moments in your room before you go to bed, that is when your greatest life questions will somehow surface.

Always make time for afternoon naps when you are feeling tired. It's better to study awake then half-study while tired. But also, always make time for random dance parties with roommates to burn off some steam. It's important to just let go and let your crazy side come out.

Always make time to care for yourself and get dressed up when your feeling yourself. Feeling more confident can only make your day better. But also, always make time to sleep in that extra 10 minutes and roll into class with that big tee shirt and nike shorts. Who cares what people think.

Always make time for early Sunday coffee dates and late night sonic runs with friends. It is in the little conversations you will find the most meaning. But also, always make time for hours of tailgating and late night social gatherings. It is here you will meet people and just enjoy being present,

Always make time to wake up before the sunrise and do something good for yourself, like running or going to yoga. It will raise you up. But also, always make time to go watch the sunset and stand in awe in the beauty of God. It will humble you.

Always make time to offer your hand out to someone who seems to be struggling. Maybe sit the extra hour and talk with your friend through a life crisis. But also, always make time to spend on your knees, praise God, and offer your needs to him.

Always make time to hang out with friends similar to you. It's important to laugh and deeply connect with others. But also, make time to look people in the eye who are different from you. Challenging your perspective may be even more important than agreeing with it.

Always make time for classes, late night outs, Cowbells, No Way Jose, the Refugee, traveling to new places, online shopping, studying for tests, car jams, football games, concerts, and all those college things. But more importantly ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS make time to reflect, discover who you are and where you want to go in life. Always make time for yourself in your voyage toward purpose in this life.

Yes, making time for sleeping, eating, and studying is important in college. But there is so much more too it.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
