Made It To The Summit

I had a great winter break!

Made It To The Summit
Meghan Murphy

Today was a really good day. It wasn’t like a phenomenal day that consisted of a dreamy dinner with any of the Chris-es (Pine, Pratt, Evans…), or even a day that put millions of dollars in my wallet or sent me off on a fantastic vacation. But, today was a really good day, and one that made me smile and hope to remember for a long time.

The started off with me sleeping through my alarm, which was great. I don’t get to relax that much at college, what with the early morning practices I can’t miss. I got up wicked late but awake nonetheless, and to a beautiful sunny day. I got dressed, had some frosted cheerios, gave my dad a kiss on the cheek and began to drive to Rachael's house to embark on our journey to the summit of little old Pack Monadnock. We are accompanied by the cutest of nature guides; Rachael’s lab, Brady… the “G.O.A.T.”

I couldn't have asked for a better day that I got to share with her. We talked the whole way up as we placed our feet strategically around the ice and into the slush/snow. Laughing about some fun people we remember from high school like the great Sierra Byrne. Sierra if you read this, please know that we love so much about you and miss your brutal honesty, we hope our doing well. We also talked nonstop about what we’re excited about for the coming semester. I’m so happy for Rach as she takes a leqp in transferring to Wheelock this year and continues pursuing her love for soccer and the natural beauty of New England. With all the struggles she went through, I’m happy she’ll be close to home where I can visit her, stick up for her against the lower level bachelors, eat tremendous amounts of food, travel, and go on adventures. I know she’s going to do great things. I have no doubt.

But the fun today didn’t stop on the mountain. I also went for a late night gym excursion with my loving/hateful buddy Charlie :) Now, Charlotte a.k.a “Charlie” is a unique individual. She makes every gym routine more fun. Tonight was no exception. We lifted, swam, laughed a ton. Yet the most special of moments was preempted by this statement from Charlotte, “Just want to let you know, I had a lot of beans today.” You can guess that the Russian Twist workout was a little extra musical :) Love ya bud haha.

Sometimes, good days surprise you. They often happen when you let your mind grow a little bit more open. I’m so grateful I bumped into Jess and Rose at Hampshire Hills, grabbed breakfast with Emily, bumped into Abby at TJMaxx, spent countless gym sessions with Charlotte, hiked with Rachel, and most importantly, spent time with my family and my loved ones.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
