The L's You Take in College

You can't call yourself a college student if you haven't made a few mistakes along the way. College is the last time in your life that responsibilities are low and consequences are limited. Some people take advantage of this by focusing solely on their studies, while others use their time to go crazy without repercussions, which leads to...

The Ls you take in college

1. Getting your fake I.D. taken away

The bouncer doesn't care that you payed $50 for it. Maybe next time you should memorize your address before going out. Take it from someone who's I.D. says Harrisburg, PA, but couldn't answer when asked what the capital of Pennsylvania is.

2. Drinking too much

Maybe you're not into alcohol, which is probably a good thing, because anyone who drinks in college is more than likely to have a night where they have too much. Just remember that you're not alone when you wake up on Sunday with a pounding headache and no idea what happened last night.

3. Showing up to class still drunk

Sometimes plans run late, and you end up starting the party at 12 AM. If you think 3 hours of sleep will immediately rid you of any drunk feelings, you're wrong. The feeling of waking up still hammered from the night before is something all college kids will experience, but are you the one who will actually go to class?

4. Forgetting about a test

Remember in high school when you would get to class and the teacher starts handing out a test you could have sworn he or she didn't tell you about? That doesn't go away in college.

5. Blacking out

Oh, the joy of having to have your roommates fill you in on every embarrassing thing you did the night before. Get ready to feel all the second-hand shame when they tell you how you drunk texted your ex and spilled drinks on people all night.

6. Getting caught by your RA

Your RA wants to be your friend, but sometimes it also feels like she wants to get you in trouble. If you have any brain cells, do not make the mistake of opening the door so that the beer cans and solo cups in your room are on full display. Good luck telling your parents you got fined because you literally showed the RA you were drinking.

7. Locking yourself out

It's a rite of passage to leave your keycard in your room at least once, but if you keep closing the door on your key, it might be time to put Residential Life on speed dial.

8. Getting walked in on

Please, I'm begging you...lock the door!!

9. Forgetting to call mom

One of the biggest L's you can take in college is not calling home. Right now, your mom is probably sitting at home wondering where you are and what you're doing. Give her some peace of mind and ring her phone. You'll be happy you did when your phone isn't blowing up with a million "why haven't you called" texts.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
