My favorite show on television (possibly my favorite show of all time) is the political drama series "Scandal" on ABC. Yes, I am completely aware of the fact that the show perpetuates the stereotype that a black woman’s sexual appetite is so pronounced and can never be quelled, even with a stellar education and prominent position in society. Yes, I am completely aware of the fact that the show plays into the stereotype of black women and gives permission for them to be nothing more than objects to be desired sexually. Yes, I am aware of the fact that President Grant is high-key a creep and that Olivia should be with Jake. #TeamJakeAllDay.

As a young African-American woman who genuinely enjoys watching "Scandal" on a weekly basis and is devastated when the show is on its winter hiatus, I know the difference in what to and what not to internalize.

First and foremost, it has been nearly 40 years since a black woman has played the lead role in a network drama. It is honestly refreshing to see a woman of color play such a strong and serious role. Olivia Pope, played by the fabulous Kerry Washington, is more than the stereotypical black woman we see on television nowadays in shows such as "Love & Hip Hop" and "The Real Housewives." Olivia Pope is a beautiful, well-educated and downright frightening force to be reckoned with.

Olivia Pope is confident and one of the most powerful people in Washington, D.C. who oftentimes plays the political game better than her white male counterparts. She is well-dressed, effective and the ultimate boss. She can be looked at as a role model to young black girls. She is a character who gives young black girls something to aspire to be. Where else do we see this on television?

Despite all of the positive attributes, the question still remains: does Olivia Pope's wit, intelligence, power and other positive characteristics outweigh the oversexual behavior the writers have given her?

To be honest, I don't know the answer to that. I believe that it comes down to understanding what to and what not to internalize. Of course it is disappointing and almost sickening to watch Olivia Pope melt around President Grant but before we rush to write her off as another stereotype, maybe we should celebrate the fact that there is a black woman playing a lead role in a mixed cast and doing it very well. Maybe we should celebrate the fact that Olivia Pope is providing a glimpse into the life of a successful, well educated black woman.

I am not saying that we should settle there on this single depiction. I am simply saying that we have a place to start and that that can be seen as a good thing. And that I love Olivia Pope.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
