A Love Note To Wilmington Weather

It's so indecisive.

A Love Note To Wilmington Weather
Jessica Cohn

Dear Wilmington weather,

I want to thank you for being so indecisive. One day I'm wearing shorts because it's bright and 70 degrees, and the next I have my heavy jacket from Pennsylvania on and a scarf to keep my neck warm from the large gusts of wind. We have rainy weather one day and then beach weather the next. I guess that's just what happens when you live near the shore.

Even though it's hard to plan what to wear, Wilmington Weather, you keep it interesting. I've come into a routine of checking the weather app twice a day to make sure the weather hasn't changed, because sometimes it does. I permanently keep my raincoat in my backpack for the frequent, random rain showers, and I've learned not to wear flip-flops on days it'll rain all day unless I want to slip.

We have ice storms and tornado watches, heat waves and low temperatures. Of course there are also the hurricanes that give us some days off from school since we don't have snow days down here. Wilmington Weather, I love it all. I come from a town where we have all four seasons and the weather follows it closely aside from rare occasions where there's a snow storm in April. Here in Wilmington, if it wasn't for the months, I would never know what season it is. It's February? Doesn't feel like it when the sky is blue and people are wearing short-sleeved shirts outside.

Although the constant changes in weather don't do well for my allergies, I love how you are so spontaneous. I've learned to layer a lot better since it could be freezing in the morning, but I'm at the beach in the afternoon. My wardrobe has never been so versatile.

Thank you, Wilmington Weather, for being the wishy-washy weather you are. It is part of what makes Wilmington so interesting.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
