It's Getting Chilly In The Valley

Are you ready for winter?

It's Getting Chilly In The Valley
Mikael Kristenson

About a month ago we were still complaining of the heat and the wretched humidity in the Lehigh Valley, then out of nowhere Fall came and smacked us all in the face. Do you remember how we all prayed for the sun to calm down for a few days because we just couldn’t stand it for much longer? How about the times we all wished winter would come already so we didn’t have to sweat as soon as we walked outside? What we all asked for is, in fact, about to occur.

So, say goodbye to those tank-tops and short-shorts, men included, because it’s about to get pretty chilly here in the Valley. I don’t know about you but I have yet to remember the fact that it’s cold when I leave the house each morning without a coat, but don’t worry, the crisp air is an instant reminder to run back inside. The weather is in that annoying stage where it is brisk in the morning, warmer in the afternoon, and just about brisk again by the time you are on your way home, but not quite enough to wear the jacket just yet. That being said, deciding what to wear is pretty problematic. Jeans or cut-offs? Short sleeves or long? Flats or boots? Jacket or sweatshirt? Too many decisions in too-little time.

Not to worry, I can only imagine mother-nature is preparing us a beautiful yet disastrous winter as we speak. Are you prepared? I’m not. I don’t mind winter but I do hate the shoveling, driving in dangerous conditions, and multiple layers of clothes that come with it. Who am I kidding, this gal never reached the beach-bod this summer, let’s add those extra layers. Still, I am definitely not prepared for winter this year.

Here are some other downfalls of winter: everyone is sick so you end up short staffed; people sniffle all day like Trump at the debate and you can’t help but cringe each time they do it; chapped lips and therefore a never ending cycle of putting on chapstick and smearing it off, add in licking those lips to help with the dryness and end up causing a split lip; cracked hands that can’t seem to hold the moisture long enough for you to actually be done rubbing it in, and frazzled hair from the dry air and hats of winter-time. I could probably think of a few more downfalls to this up-and-coming colder weather but I think you all get the drift so I will stop there. I am nowhere near ready for these change of events, are you?

Needless to say, prepare yourselves. We think it's chilly now but, it’s only going to get colder. Those prayers of cooler weather have been answered and soon enough we will all be stuffing our pockets and purses with an endless supplies of tissues, chapstick, and lotion. Stocking up on canned-goods, and making sure we get first dibs on all the shovels and rock-salt. So, be sure to enjoy the sunshine while you can because we won’t have it for much longer. Just don’t forget about the terrible heat and humidity when it's zero degrees outside and you swear you can’t wait for summer. Remember, when living in the Valley, we get all four seasons so when one season ends you better believe the other is right around the corner.

Stay warm, healthy, and happy.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
