Let's start off by answering a few questions. First, what is Love Your Melon? Love Your Melon is an organization established by two Minnesota college students, Zachary Quinn and Brian Keller, in order to give back to the community. This company functions as a buy one give one, meaning for every product sold, a child fighting cancer also receives one. The original goal of the company was to provide a hat to every child in America fighting cancer. Just last year, the company was able to achieve this goal and sold a total of 45,000 hats with the help of college campus crews. Crews can be established on any campus and Towson has one of their own. Each campus can earn credits for products sold, and once crews meet a certain number of credits, they receive certain rewards such as visiting children's hospitals and other events.
Since the organization was able to achieve their goal, a new aspect to the company was added which included donating 50% of its profits to CureSearch and the Pinky Swear Foundation as well as continuing to donate a hat to each child in need. Curesearch is a local organization in Bethesda, Maryland focusing on cancer research. Local events such as the CureSearch walk happen all over Maryland in which Love Your Melon also spreads their mission. While Love Your Melon continues to uphold their original standard as well as support these two organizations, they have transitioned from a non-profit to a for-profit company.
While they are not considered to be for profit, this does not mean support should decrease or waiver in any way. Being defined as for profit simply means the objective of the company is to make funds to cover cost. Each handmade item has a cost associated with it, including the cost of the product itself, employees, and the cost to keep the business up and running. Love Your Melon focuses on interacting with customers and patients alike to keep them in the loop as well as foster relationships with these individuals.
Some may be concerned with the switch, but the company has made countless efforts to stay true to it original mission which it still continues to uphold. Love Your Melon is continuing to grow and is always looking for suggestions and ideas.
