Why You Should Love Melanie Martinez

Just a "child that experiences adult things."

If you don't know who Melanie Martinez is, she auditioned for The Voice, and was part of Team Adam, but she was tragically eliminated in the fifth week. She is such a unique talent. She started making her own music, and the result was, without a doubt, one-of-a-kind. If you haven't listened to her weird, addicting music, you definitely should.

Martinez is mostly thought of as that girl with the two different colors of hair, as shown in this picture. After some research, I found this was actually modeled after Cruella de Vil from 101 Dalmatians.

Her sound is individual, to say the least. She is the strange artist that we have all been waiting for. If you don't believe me, just take a look at her music videos. That's what makes everyone love her. Her album Cry Baby was released in 2015 and has millions upon millions of views on YouTube and Spotify.

Her concept for this album was based on a character, Cry Baby, which is a reimagined version of Martinez herself when she was a child. She said that Cry Baby is basically "a child who experiences adult things." It's messed up, twisted, and I love every song.

As reflective of the theme of her album, Melanie decorates her apartment like a nursery, instead of an apartment of an actual adult.

These are goals right here. If you still aren't convinced that Melanie Martinez is an awesome human being, her first word as a baby was "Mine!" This was subsequently after her dad took a Pop Tart out of her hand. Is this not all of us? Also, if not represented clearly in her album, she collects vintage dolls. She basically is a vintage doll herself.

Now back to her music. I love listening to music and finding new things to get obsessed with. I can tell you with complete confidence that Melanie Martinez's music is unparalleled to any other artist. Who else can sing about Mr. Potato Head dolls, soap, milk and cookies, and training wheels, and make it into one of the most addicting and successful albums there is? No one else can do that.

Martinez is now on tour for her album, which I am going to see this Friday and i'm super excited. Apparently her concerts are amazing and completely representative of this quirky, talented person. If you haven't listened to her music, I would suggest playing Carousel (which was featured as part of the American Horror Story trailer) or Pity Party. These are probably her most popular and catchy songs. So do yourself a favor and sit down and play some Melanie Martinez songs. I promise you won't be disappointed.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
