I Have A Love/Hate Relationship With Spring Break

Spring Break is the vacation everyone yearns for as soon as winter break comes to a close. It’s a time to either hit the slopes, have days filled with sunshine and sand between your toes, or quality time with loved ones. It’s always such a tease for summer and all the wonderful trips and festivities it entails. However, there’s one thing about Spring Break that doesn't sit right with me. College students take this week as a marathon for drinking and getting completely blackout. My question is, what’s the point?

I am all for going to the lake or beach and having an occasional drink or two, but I don't understand the sudden urge for girls to walk around topless for plastic beads and/or shots and people binge drink to the point of getting alcohol poisoning. Now understand, I love having fun and I get that alcohol is a big factor in “fun” for college aged individuals, but that’s not an excuse to shuffle your morals underneath the rug and to act completely irrational. It’s not some monumental rite of passage for college students and young adults. There’s absolutely no excuse for the crude behavior that’s displayed. Keep flashing your boobs to the camera and smoking a joint, your future employer(s) will love that!

It’s gotten so bad that PCB (Panama City Beach) in Florida banned alcohol consumption on the beach during the month of March back in May of 2015 because that’s when the majority of colleges have Spring Break, and it’s a hot spot for people to get sh*t faced (pardon my French). Here’s what the council had to say:

They erupted into applause after the vote was taken. That is absolutely pathetic. Spring Break isn’t an excuse for you to act like heathens –– put your clothes on and drink like civilized human beings!

Drugs, sex, alcohol –– oh my! All things that you can expect to happen when you mix unintelligent college students and terrible life choices together. When did going on a trip with your friends to take a break from exams become such a terrible thing? Spring Break is the perfect example of “too much of a good thing can become a bad thing.” You won’t catch me at a beach during Spring Break, and here’s why:

Go home ya filthy animals. While you’re having so much “fun” that you won’t even remember your trip and the ridiculous amount of money spent on alcohol and/or drugs, I’ll be at the lake spending time with friends and family.

Happy Spring Break, y’all! Be safe and for the love of all that is holy, make smart choices.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
