Valentine's Day is around the corner and if you’re on Tinder you may encounter people trying to pick you up for a quick Valentine’s date or hookup. As we know, Tinder does not have the best reputation, but there is hope. Last Valentine’s Day I went home to celebrate with my family as I had no one to celebrate with because I was single. When I went back to school I was laying in bed one night, about to delete Tinder because I was so sick of it. Then, I decided that I would go on one last time and if the first guy who messaged me was disrespectful and scummy then I would delete it forever.
The first guy who messaged me turned out to be super nice and carried on multiple conversations with me without being disrespectful, scummy, or rude (a rarity on the app). After a while, he asked for my number and we went on our first date. It wasn’t weird or awkward at all. Again, another rarity when trying to find love on Tinder. Fast forward to now and we’ve been dating for almost a year.
What I am here to say is that Tinder is not all bad. It does take time to get through the bad guys before you find a good one. I believe that if it’s meant to happen, it will happen. You may find a good guy, but things just might not work out.
Also for all you people who have had or have a relationship that came from Tinder, I too know what it’s like to have people judge when you say that’s how you met. “Oh Tinder? He just wants you for the sex.” For those of you that remotely know me, know that I am not the kind of person to let a guy use me like that. If you even remotely know my boyfriend, you know that he is not that kind of guy. I believe that there are people on Tinder that are truly looking for a relationship, because I know a few other couples who have met that way too. My boyfriend even knows of someone who married the girl he met on the app. I overheard someone once talking about how her daughter is engaged to a guy she met online.
I believe that online dating sites and dating apps are “the way of the future”. With our generation and the one’s following us being so tech savvy, it does not surprise me. I thought Tinder was extremely shallow and stupid before I started using it, because you make a quick judgement off of someone’s appearance. However, isn’t that how it’s done at a party or a bar? You see someone and think that they look attractive, so you plan out how to make your move. I guess the fault with Tinder is that by swiping left you do not give yourself the chance to even know the person. If you see someone in person, they don’t just disappear if you don’t think they're attractive enough.
I’m not saying that you are guaranteed a relationship by using Tinder because I do admit a majority of it is users are looking for hookups and one night stands. However, I do believe that everything happens for a reason and if that’s how you met your significant other, then so what. That’s how you met. I mean come on people, what are the chances of you meeting someone who is respectful and looking for a relationship on the app? On top of that there’s also a 50/50 chance of you two getting along and having a connection. So if that happens, who cares how you met. The only things that matter are that he’s respectful and that you're happy.
