As we may all be familiar with the comedian George Lopez from his sitcoms to his own comedy show- this show is quite like no other. “Lopez” captures the essence of what it’s like being a celebrity of color not just in Hollywood’s industry but also, having a large amount of money, a family, and being higher class while in the public eye. The show explores everything from private schools in Beverly Hills to management’s demands, to dating, to twisted views of the press- and my personal favorite, the Star Line Tours.
This show may just be TV’s wake-up call as it explores how wealthy people of color are treated in the entertainment industry. The show exploits the underlying racial tensions that George Lopez encounters every day; from work to home; of course, in a comedic yet truthful way. This show has the potential to wake up Hollywood’s predominantly white executives to assist in destroying the prejudicial tensions that are evident in the heart of the entertainment industry. “Lopez” consistently tears down prejudicial walls built with every episode.
Apart from breaking social and cultural boundaries- the show is overall amazingly funny. It remains true to George Lopez’s previous work but, with a lot more honesty and in my opinion, a lot more comedy as well. The show has a sit-com with a dash of reality tv feel and focuses on what quite honestly, feels like you’re watching George Lopez’s diary come to life. If you’re a southern California resident or native, you’ll adore this show as it explores San Fernando, Los Angeles, and Beverly Hills ; from cultural to social, the show breaks so many boundaries in a way never before seen.
Overall, the entity of “Lopez” has made its way into our hearts through comedically exploiting prejudice in America’s entertainment industry. While the show only has eight episodes so far- it’s a great one to binge watch on a weekend with a friend or two. We can’t wait to see more of “Lopez” waking and shaking up the entertainment industry! If you ever need a laugh and some waking up, “Lopez” is a must!
