Chicago is profoundly known for startup artists who strive to make a name for themselves. In such a competitive industry, a spot on the market can seem far-fetched. As an artist myself, I look, and find inspiration everywhere. I was taken aback when I stumbled upon entrepreneur, and fashion designer Anna Hovet. Her story is remarkable and one that demands to be told. Widely known as “Queen of Comfort” and featured on TedX Talks Anna goes viral and is awarded “Chicago's Best Local Clothing Designer” --and for good reason.
Originally from Grand Forks, North Dakota, Anna began her journey by coming to the great city of Chicago where she studied at School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2007. Upon graduating, she was hired at Kids Headquarters where she excelled and designed layette for well-known brands such “Ecko”, “Calvin Klein”, “Kenneth Cole”, and “Target”. As discussed in her Ted Talk, Anna's career came to a halt when The Great Recession of 2008 hit. Taken aback by the economy, she was laid off from her job. However, like every great designer before her, Anna was determined to not give up. In 2009, Anna began to make designs in her apartment where she begged boutique owners to come take a look at her work. To no surprise, they loved her work. Within two months her work was being sold in stores, featured in national magazines, not to mention her designs being worn by several celebrities.
Anna was not intimidated by this new field she found herself indulging in. Although she had no experience in any form of marketing, nonetheless had she ever considered herself an entrepreneur, she strived to keep up with her new found success. With her success at a peak, she turned to the one source at her fingertips where she could learn-- the internet. Picking up skills left to right, Anna has become one of Chicago's best local clothing designers. She is seen as an inspiration to not only myself but designers worldwide. Taking a look at her designs, let's talk about her title “Queen of Comfort” because this title isn't handed out for just anything. Every fashionista knows the struggle all too well of dressing “cute, but comfy”. This go-to look is more than essential for everyone's wardrobe. Anna Hovet captures exactly what it takes to pull off the look. As lead designer of HOVET Apparel, she takes her designs to the next level. With her small team of hand-picked tutors, their goal is to "motivate students to show their best effort towards schoolwork supply them with executive functioning skills that will stay with them through college."
Taking advantage of what she's learned by growing up in the millennial generation, this entrepreneur has earned her page in magazines and newspapers like “Lucky”, and the “Chicago Tribune”. She is a prime example for artists to never give up. Despite not being able to control things, it is important to remind yourself of your worth and to never settle for a job where your skills are not valued. Anna was not intimated by the obstacles her career threw at her, nor did she let her success change her. Ultimately, she is a prime example to never give up on your dreams, because who knows, one day you might find yourself successful where you never thought you'd be.
