A month into summer calls for some Netflix binging. After my findings, Bob's Burgers ended up being the winner. With a season left, I am hooked on the show and think other animated adult tv show fanatics should get on the bandwagon too.
Bob's Burgers pilot may be a little outside the box.
Bob Belcher is a middle-aged married man with three children who hasn't had the best of luck with pursuing his dream of running a restaurant because his family are the employees. His oldest Tina, is an awkward teenager, his son Jean, is an inappropriately obnoxious kid, and his youngest, Louise, is a mischievous little girl. On top of that, his wife Linda is an extremely loud and joyful woman who has a very defined accent. All of this energy from his family sometimes scares customers away putting comical relief.
In the pilot, Louise spreads a rumor that the restaurant serves human flesh in their patties causing the health inspector, Hugo, to show up on the scene. This pilot was the actual pitch for the show in it's entirety -- a family who has a restaurant that serves human flesh (In other words, Sweeney Todd style). The creator, Loren Bouchard, wanted a much darker feel and while her original idea was rejected, the idea was still incorporated into the first episode in a more comical twist.
Like other animated tv shows, most of the cast is played by males...
A little while ago, I became curious about the voice actors behind the work of Bob's Burgers and found that in reality, the only family member of the Belcher's who is played by a female is Louise. The rest of the family are all played by males! More specifically it was hard to believe that Linda was played by a man especially because of her accent.
...And they record their sessions together.
Most modern day television shows record their sessions separately so that it is easier on schedules for each individual actor. But Bob's Burgers is adamant on having the actors play off of each other in one recording session. To me, that makes sense because I'm an actor myself but it's not only that, but it also makes sense for time schedules too. I'm sure it's better to get a whole recording session done in one sitting rather than having several separate meetings with management team.
The show is only half a decade old and already has one Primetime Emmy award.
In 2015, the TV show won for the category of "Outstanding Animated Program" award. Bob's Burgers had fierce competition for the category of "Outstanding Character Voice-Over Performance" but only got nominated while The Simpsons won the award.
Bob's Burgers is an entertaining show that scopes into the American family lifestyle and some of the frustrations that come along with it. If you are interested in learning more, here is a video from behind the scenes of the actors working in a live recording session.
