Why Long Distance Relationships Are Worth It

You have been dating your boyfriend for almost a year now. But there is one problem...y'all just graduated high school and are about to go off to college. But not to the same school. All these negative thoughts have been in the back of your mind for months, about how it will be "too hard" or "it will never work." But here is why long distance is worth it.

1. Absence makes the heart grow fonder.

This could not be anymore cliche, I know, but it is one of the truest statements. While you are away from your significant other, it gets hard at times. But knowing that you can get away for a while to take a short trip to see them is one of the most comforting feelings there is. They are like a mini getaway.

2. You appreciate them more.

You never appreciate having the ability to see each other every day until you are no longer able to do so. Those short weekend trips that y'all have become so accustomed to mean more to y'all then anything at the moment. You spend more one-on-one time together and cherish every moment of it, because y'all don't get much of it anymore. You cherish those little things that you used to overlook.

3. You learn to trust more.

Being long distance means that you can't be with your significant other 24/7, so therefore, you have to learn to be OK with things that you never used to be OK with (like them being around random girls/boys at parties). You have to learn not to be jealous over the little things that won't matter in the future. You build a sense of trust that no one or nothing could possibly break.

4. You get to grow into your own person.

While the distance is hard, it has its perks. Being in two different places sucks, but you have the opportunity to be your own person, make your own friends and make your own memories. You have the chance to grow into who you are meant to be with noone or nothing holding you back.

5. You love a lot more.

Being apart makes you put so much more effort into being together. The distance makes you want to be with that person so much more than you already do. It makes you appreciate the love that you already have, as well as the love that y'all are building.

I get it, long distance is super hard, but it is worth it. The feeling of love and happiness that you feel does not compare to any other feeling in the world. At the end of the day, you will always have that foundation of love and trust to fall back on, no matter how many miles apart.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
