Most people would assume that a long distance relationship is bound for failure. That one partner or the other will eventually get tired of the agonizing wait to finally be together again. People worry that having a partner hundreds of miles away from you may cause you or you partner to cheat. (If you are afraid that you or your partner might cheat in your relationship, you shouldn't be together, near or far).
But these peoples' misconceptions cannot be applied to every long distance relationship. Personally, my long distance relationship is the healthiest relationship I've ever been in throughout my entire life.
While I've been mostly lucky with my past relationships, none of them compare to my long distance relationship. In the past, either my s.o. was too jealous or I was too controlling, but I thankfully learned from these relationships and am able to use what I learned then in my current relationship.
In general, healthy relationships should consist of two people supporting each other, communicating sufficiently about any issues or problems they may face, and loving each other through the good times and the bad. My long distance relationship has all of the above, and more!
Because we don't see each other as often as other couples, we have a lot more time to focus on our schoolwork while still being in a committed relationship. Neither one of us can distract the other with the constant presence of having a girlfriend or boyfriend around. Yet, just like other couples, we help each other study by quizzing the other over video chats. Long distance teamwork makes the long distance dream work!
Even though we get to see each other only once in a while, our communication is strong. This is not to suggest that we text each other 24/7; it's just not practical for us. My s.o. works all day and then takes classes until late at night while most of my classes and work are over in the afternoon. I wouldn't be helping him any by distracting him from his career goals. We chat sporadically throughout the day, just to let each other know we're thinking about one another, and spend a while telling each other about our days right before we go to sleep.
And even though we may get a little jealous of each other when we go out to places where they may be other attractive people trying to get our attention, we trust one another wholeheartedly. Every strong relationship is founded on trust. There could be 10,000 miles between us and I would still trust him completely.
I truly believe that long distance relationships can be the best relationship of your life, as long as you have someone really special waiting for you at the airport terminal. So don't let anyone discourage you from being in a long distance relationship. While it's not the easiest relationship, it's the most rewarding because when you finally see your significant other for the first time in what feels like forever, there is no greater feeling.
