Why Minimizing Your Closet Will Maximize Your Happiness
onnit

The week before school was out, I was forced to live out of a suitcase. In that week it felt as though a massive weight was lifted off of my shoulders. All my stuff, my clothes, my shoes, my hats ... they were all gone. And it felt amazing.

Today I realized that I want to feel like that all the time.

So here I am, forcing myself to clean out my closet, trying to lift the massive weight of materialistic items off of my shoulders once again. The only problem? I completely underestimated exactly how heavy that weight is.

If you are anything like me then you associate shopping with happiness. For instance, have you ever found something at a store and thought to yourself, "If I just had this one thing then I would be so happy"? Well I know I have. I also know that this "happiness" you think you're buying isn't real. Let me tell you the painful but honest truth: real happiness does not come in a shopping bag. As much happiness you think that new dress or pair of shoes will bring you, it is only temporary. And pretty soon you'll be back in a store searching for something new.

So, because of this, I have come to realize that I, like many others, live an unnecessary overabundant lifestyle. Not only is this lifestyle unnecessary, but it is destructive. We are victims of consumerism and advertising; we were raised in a society where "more is better" and "enough isn't enough." Therefore this unnecessary lifestyle of buying things we don't need has become an accepted and normal part of our society.

So how do we change?

Well, we must teach ourselves to live simply. As a society we must learn to detach ourselves from material objects and disassociate them with happiness. I am not saying that you have to give up every single material object you own, but rather minimize what you have. I know it can be overwhelming, but start simple; just go into your closet and be honest with yourself. Get rid of the things you don't use and the clothes you don't wear, and begin lifting this weight off your shoulders.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
