Too many times in our lives we miss out on opportunities to really experience what living is, part of this stems from the fear that we don’t want to appear out of place, or out of the ordinary. But perhaps another reason is because we just don’t have the courage to tell ourselves to do what we want with our lives. By this point each of us has a basic routine, or an everyday schedule that we relive without realizing it, and maybe this is the exact reason that so many people say “time flies.”
Although it sounds so easy to just wake up one day and say you are going to do something, saying it and doing it are two very different things. That doesn’t necessarily mean you don’t want to do it, but rather you begin to make excuses of why you shouldn’t. Excuses like the need to “act your age” or “these dreams are too childish.” Who said that growing up had to be boring? Who said that after you hit a magical age, you suddenly need to let go of everything you wished for the year before?
Most likely from a young age you imagined what it would be like when you got older. Going through each day making your own decisions seemed like the best thing that could ever happen; until it actually did. Dreams of traveling the world, or saving those in need started to die along with our youth. We listen to the things little kids say to us each day and although some of them may sound silly, there is an odd wisdom behind those little voices. A wisdom that a few of us can still recognize because a part of us wants to hold on to that silliness a bit longer.
Instead of telling yourself all the reasons not to do something, you should explain to yourself why you should; and maybe that something isn’t even really exciting, but rather just something you need to do for yourself. It could range from something as small as grabbing that extra piece of cake, to taking that life-long desired trip through Europe. What does it matter, as long as you are happy?
This life is way too short to be stressing yourself out about how you can keep everyone else happy because the truth is they probably never will be. So why not invest your time into something that can make your life worth the while instead of just wishing you could? There has got to be more to this life than doing paperwork or writing essays, and taking exams. And there is no way I will accept not living my life to the fullest.
