I was introduced to this song during the One Act (it's our opening song) I am in, I was immediately moved by the lyrics and whenever the song started playing during our One Act I would start singing along and listening closely to every lyric that I did not know yet. What is this song? "Try" by Colbie Caillat, but we choose the cover by Max & Kurt Schneider. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=We3fk8PwpXk)
Put your make up on
Get your nails done
Curl your hair
Run the extra mile
Keep it slim
So they like you. Do they like you?
Get your sexy on
Don't be shy, girl
Take it off
This is what you want, to belong
So they like you. Do you like you?
Get your shopping on, at the mall, max your credit cards
You don't have to choose, buy it all, so they like you
Do they like you?
These lyrics speak to what the world and society tells us as girls. We have to look perfect and that means keeping it slim, buying all the newest fashionable clothing, and having our makeup done perfectly. I know that girls especially struggle with self image. We are constantly nervous about how we look on the outside, always asking the question of do other people like me? If we tell ourselves no then we try to fix ourselves. We are trying to please the world instead of pleasing God.
Wait a second,
Why, should you care, what they think of you
When you're all alone, by yourself, do you like you?
Do you like you?
You don't have to try so hard
You don't have to, give it all away
You just have to get up, get up, get up, get up
You don't have to change a single thing
As long as we are living according to God's will, we should not care what society thinks about us. We need to be who God made us to be. We do not need to get our hair, makeup, and nails done and make sure our clothes are up to some false standard of perfection. When we start living in constant fear of making sure everyone around us likes us, we stop focusing on God.
Imagine if we tried to please God as much as we try pleasing the world?
I am still trying to work on this. Lately though, I have stopped caring what everyone else thinks of me, because I know that as long as I am living a life the brings honor and glory to God why should I care what others think? We live our lives for God not for man. The Bible says in Galatians 6:8 "Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life" This is evidence enough that we need to live to please the Lord and not the flesh.
