Being the youngest sibling is not always a perk. Between the hand-me-down clothes to the comments like, “You are nothing like your sister,” it can be annoying. There are some great perks, though. I have loved having an older sister. These are the top five things that I enjoyed most about having an older sister and being the youngest in my family.
1. Don’t do that or else this will happen.
You learn quickly the things that you should not even try and attempt. It is like those TV shows that say “Don't try this at home."
2. You’ll always have a friend.
Having an older sister is like always having a best friend. Even though sometimes you don’t get along, they will always be there for you. No matter what, they will not leave you hanging. It could be lunch at the local diner when you are free, or helping you get out a jam at two in the morning.
3. Don't lie.
Now this may seem like common sense, but when you are caught red-handed, it is easier said than done. Just tell the truth because parents are more likely to understand and not give you as big a punishment. Before you say anything, think about the outcome — the truth is best.
4. Hand-me-downs are not always bad.
There are those few times when your sister would get these super expensive jeans and you just think to yourself in a few short months [hopefully] these will be mine. Granted, hand-me-downs are not always the best, but you have to keep your eyes peeled for the hidden gems.
5. Advice in general.
Having an older sister helps with relationship advice, friendship advice or any type of advice you need. They may not be that much older but they have lived through what you soon will live through, so anything helps.
I think having an older sister is one of the greatest gifts ever. I have someone who gets it — "it" meaning my parents, my friends, my overall life. We are in the same boat and having someone by your side like an older sister is the greatest thing ever. I certainly would not trade being the youngest [“the baby”] for anything.
