In the day in age we live in, social media practically runs our lives. Whether you are one to religiously update your accounts or one to take a more passive approach, it still has become a big part of our everyday routine.
We have succumbed to the world of social media and its effects. If it is posting a picture of our meal or where we traveled or just a good old selfie, we almost feel forced to let the world know what we are doing every second of the day. Most of the time, we put a facade on social media that does not reflect our real life.
When we post something, we keep refreshing the page to see how many people have liked the picture or tweet. It makes us feel good to see a number of likes going up every time we check, but if we do not get as many likes as we expected, we feel disappointed. Why is this? Have we come to let the opinions of others determine our worth as a person?
Our generation has grown into becoming one with lower self-esteem, which therefore leads us to want more likes on social media and if we do not get enough, our self-esteem hits the floor. This makes us feel accepted by society, but what is this dire need to feel this way? When did the opinions of random peers become more important than those of people close to us?
In our technology filled world, this is how we express ourselves, and of course we want the best feedback we can get. As much as we want to feel accepted by our followers, we also need to keep in mind that we are not always going to please everyone. When you post a status or a picture, there is bound to be some people who disagree or dislike your post.
The thing is, now that we have this way of making ourselves feel better, it is hard to go back. Tall or short, skinny or not, male or female, you are beautiful in every way, and you need to believe it. We should learn to love who we are without the need of constant praise.
