Within the last few months, I’ve come to the conclusion that my life is actually…mine. It’s so easy to just allow your life to fly by or to constantly depend on others to get you through and eventually before you know it, your life was flown by.
Recently, I’ve come in contact with this new type of independence, one that’s kind of motivating and reassuring. Now that I’m getting older, I’m starting to realize that my life is what I make of it and that my actions are what is going to get me where I want to be. Of course, there will always be people around to help out or give you a boost, but it’s essentially up to you to get what you want from life.
An example that is extremely relevant right now and probably always will be would be getting ready to go to college. There is so much independence and freedom being thrown at you while you enter one of the most rigorous and important times of your life and how you handle it is completely up to you. For instance, choosing how involved you are in you academics is a huge responsibility and is something that is entirely in your control. It’s so easy to get distracted but it’s also so rewarding to stay on track. The decision is essentially up to you and what you’d prefer to take from a college experience. It’s almost weird to think about the fact that it’s now your turn to make your decisions academically. The stepping-stones, including your parents and teachers, aren’t going to be able to control your actions anymore. Of course, there will always be someone to advise or guide you but it’s your physical being that will choose what you want to do this time, and that’s pretty scary.
Staying involved and doing things that you love are also things that I feel are important in building the life you want for yourself. This can include putting work into your hobbies and staying active in your community. By doing this, you’re doing something, which is only going to better yourself as a person. As you become independent, it’s so important to keep the idea of growing in mind. Anything you do or want is always going to require some kind of work to be achieved. Enforcing the concept of strengthening yourself while doing so is only going to make it easier. Keeping yourself in mind, preferring first in mind, will essentially shape your life into what you want it to be. When you put yourself first, you are constantly doing, thinking, and being you. Living this way will result in beneficial results no matter what the situation is. It also acts as a constant assurance as to what you’re making out of your life.
Of course, this all sounds too perfect. Wake up every morning, put some work in, and BAM: your life becomes a dream. Not at all. Being able to get up and chase your dreams requires an abundance of confidence, motivation, self-love, and overall strength. It’s so much easier said then done. As we become adults, we are given more and more chances to fall off, including obstacles and conflict we can’t control. The best thing to do in these situations is to use what you can control, that being yourself, to overcome them and continue onto your path. Someone dragging you down physically, emotionally, or mentally? Cut them out of your life. Always want to put more work into your passion or hobby? Work on it. Practice it. Never leave it alone. Not doing so well in school? OPEN YOUR EYES, being educated is so important! Your education is SO important. I know, the actions to solving these and most problems are extremely difficult, especially if it requires breaking habit, but with the right kind of mindset, anything is possible. This is your life, it’s your job to groom and maintain it to its perfection. No one is going to do it for you, I promise. So as life continues and you begin to gain more and more control, use it. Be the person you want to be. Do the things you want to do. In the end, we are left with ourselves, and I’d much rather be able to recall a life that I’ve made for myself rather than one I decided to settle for.
