It's The Little Things

I still get wildly enthusiastic about little things... I play with leaves. I skip down the street and run against the wind

Happiness isn't a destination, it's a journey. Happiness is knowing that the little things can make all the difference. It’s being able to embrace joy from the simplest of things and letting yourself fully live in each moment. I think that there's this misconception that happiness will just happen to us overnight, like magic. Like once we get that dream job, or the car we want, or that specific person that we’ll immediately be fixed. That in order for us to be happy we must wait for our dreams to come true and happiness will pour out of us forever. But we’re wrong. Happiness doesn't work like that, happiness is more like being tired or hungry— it comes and goes. I truly believe that if we stopped searching for happiness, if we stopped expecting it to last forever, people would feel it more often.

We’ve all had days were we feel like we’ll never get out of bed, like the world is dark and gray and that the sun will never shine again. It's on these days where we need the most love, it's on these days when we need to cherish the small things the most. So here's a list of things that might brighten your day the next time you aren't necessarily feeling yourself.

1. Clothes fresh out of the dryer

2. Peeling an orange in a single peel

3. Receiving a hand written letter

4. Dancing like a maniac when no one's watching

5. Waking up early and realizing you have hours to sleep

6. Listening to your favorite song on repeat

7. The smell of rain or freshly cut grass

8. Taking the first sip of your favorite drink

9. Popping bubble wrap

10. New razors

11. Clean sheets

12. When you find the missing match to your favorite socks.

13. Taking off your shoes after a long day

14. Laughing until your stomach aches

15. Running into your friend you haven't seen in a long time

16. Have a pillow fight

Learn to smile just because. Laugh for no reason at all. Choose to see the joy and life in the world. Just take a chance and choose the little things instead of solely focusing on the big ones.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
